Sometimes I feel like the Kirby lore team resents the Masked Dedede fight because that was the last time Dedede has ever been fought where he was completely sound of mind. Everything since then has been either brainwashing or some other thing, and it feels like they just have to come up with reasons to make him an enemy these days. Mechanically, I'm not complaining, because Dedede fights are always fun, but it does make Dedede look maybe a little more stupid than he actually is.

It is genuinely really cool to see how theyve kept this up for almost a decade after the game is released. The series lore and story are not really deep at all but I think what makes me like it alot is the small consistencies that the games keep in mind like this.

You're right about this. My point is mostly just that Masked Dedede was THE loss where Dedede definitively gave up on being Kirby's antagonist. At least as far as he was concerned. The thing here is just that there's never any way to justify a regular, non-possessed encounter between him and Kirby anymore, outside of I guess arenas, but that's for sport.

Yeah, which is fair, but King Dedede hasn't really been an active antagonist since Kirby's Adventure. He tried to stop Kirby from freeing Nightmare back then, and beyond Masked Dedede I'm trying to think of another instance where Dedede even fights Kirby while non-possessed and I don't really recall any.

Fair but I bring it up cuz the plot specifically paints Dedede being dick and petty to the point where forgoes the "competition" aspect (a competition HE made to get Kirby to come and lose btw) and just tries to beat the shit out of Kirby with a robot. it's way more antagonistic than Fighters 2 where he formally challenges to a fight or Fighters Deluxe and BB that don't actually have a plot attached to them. It's the most hostile he's been in years funnily enough

You're completely right. He was closer to his completely different anime self than his actual game self and it was very jarring. Still though, I wanted to point out that he didn't do anything actually villainous other than going a bit too much to try to defeat Kirby and even then he did technically invite Kirby to follow him to the robot instead of forcing him somehow.
Kirby Fighters Deluxe's pause screen also has him go "Are you ready for a team battle? Then let's go!"" which is definitely more evocative of a friendly challenge too.
