the fighting game genre is inherently flawed. on the "higher" levels the game loses any sort of creativity towards approaching the fights. it basically comes down to learning a few combos, waiting for the conditions of the combo to be fulfilled and then deleting at least half of your opponents' hp. do this every round. i don't see any fun in that at all. there is no room for expression or unique approaches. for a genre presenting itself as overtly complex, is really is that simple.

Learning combos is not part of high level gameplay that's like the most basic part of the game. The noob that knows all the combos and gets killed because he can't apply a single one is a stereotype of the genre.

It shouldn't be a "basic part." Combos as they have developed over the past few decades are boring and gay.
Combos are the same shit as the "movement mechanics" hubbub going on with FPSes right now. The 20+ hit combos where you're scooping up the opponent just one frame before he hits the ground, doing a half dozen specials to juggle and then end with a cinematic finisher offers no greater value than a 5~ hit combo that you either need to commit to before you're even sure the first hit landed, or react to and confirm off of.

It's far more hype to go in on something you're not even sure will work, compared to autopiloting the optimal string you know you can pull off every time off of any stray hit.

oh i spend a lot of time learning things in strive, i dont get blown up, i am not a bad player, but when it comes down to it, the gameplay is rather non creative and you can easily see how a lot of players just have their 1 or two combos that they constantly try to set up and win, it's boring. i mostly play jack-o because her moveset allows for being creative on the fly and you can do some pretty funny stuff with it.

the combo is the reward for being creative in neutral. not the other way around. when you take a piece in chess. the way that piece gets taken is always the same, you just move your piece over the opponents, but the way you create that opening is what keeps people playing.
