Why has there NEVER been a satisfactory Trojan War game when it is the most famous piece of media in history?

Because no one actually cares about it. No one's actually read the Iliad, People just know they're supposed to have read it at some point. And have you read it? You'd have to do some ridiculous near-vandalism to turn it into a mainstream video game like what they did to Dante's inferno. Best you could hope for is like a game based on those weird side quests Achilles does near the middle when he steps away from the war

I have read it, I think it would make a great game, especially if you play as someone cool like Achilles

Well, technically there's a Middle Eastern novel about magical jews that is more famous, has a cult following even.

Nobody makes action RPGs set in historical settings except Ubisoft, and when you eliminate real time action genres you're left with strategy which is fucking dead

Greece had the coolest mythology, but a game would be fun only if it's based on it, instead of blatantly copying one of the existing stories.

I've read it and for 90% of it Achilles is just throwing a fit about a slave that Agamemnon took from him, only fights after Patroclo dies and half the time he's "fighting" a river. Menelao is the real fighter. It would be good maybe as an RTS game or point and click, not as a fighting game. Maybe even a disco-like controlling Odysseus.

Friendly reminder that Achilles is a gay chad.

Akshually, as someone who read this shit let me clarify it for you.

>main conflict happens because Achilles female slave, whom be deeply loved is taken away
>at one point they throw a party where both guys go to their respective tents to sleep and fuck girls
>at another point Achilles contemplates going home to find a cute wife and get children
>greek gay relationship are always portrayed with older man being the strong daddy while the younger is the fag. Here Achilles is the strong hero despite being the younger one
>at no point at all is there any hint of homo shit

It’s been debated for 2000 years and Plato himself believed they were lovers due to how Achilles acts in the death of Patroclus. Homer never explicitly says it is or isn’t.
>they share a tent when others sleep with their slaves
>Achilles’ grief was described as excessive
>he literally wants to die because he misses Patroclus
>they are buried together and their ashes are mixed
It’s something you can believe if you read through the lines. That said, they’re fictional people so it doesn’t matter. They can be gay lovers or brothers in arms. It’s down to the readers perspective as has been the case for a millennium

If you actually look at how greek writers report on the storys themes a lot of the older writers report it as heterosexual, not homosexual. It is only way later on that the greeks begin to report homosexual subtexts to the original story.

Just as well. It's not supposed to be read, it's supposed to be sung.

This. When I read them both I realised how fucking dull it was. It’s a performance written in a book and needs to be performed. If you’re going to read it, then an audiobook is the better way.

Well no one outside of terminally online tumblr girls believe that about Frodo and Sam. Achilles and Patroclus have been debated for over 2000 years. It is not a modern debate.

I've read the Iliad and I think you could still make a decent game around it as long as the player isn't playing as the same character the whole time, especially not Achilles. A section of playing as Diomedes and fighting two gods would be fun, or as Hector fighting Patrocles with Achilles' special armor. Could make it objective based where you have to fight to take down certain targets or capture ground or defend your boats.
