I've listened to an interview with raphael and he said the combat was a pain to make, it wasn't even the version they wanted. It was supposed to be more accurate with actual continuous path hitboxes etc. You need some serious engineering autism to get it right and those people are in short supply.

Right now it's simplified where only a specific part of the sword collides with enemies and once it connects it's over for this animation. Look at source mods like age of chivalry where the blade has a ton of damage lines that are seperate and in various locations, not just tge tip. They paint a 3d damage line in the game world and everything gets hit within the path without interruptions. It would require directional blocks at angles instead of vagely looking in the direction of attack.
