A few friends and I have gotten back into playing with the release of new characters. However, regardless of who I am playing, win or lose, I never feel like I am performaning very well. Because that's what makes it work. Many people don't realize that one of the fundamental underlying issue (at least in the eyes of people like me) with hero shooters like Overwatch and Marvel Rivals is the formula they use for macro of a match is boring as fuck and really linear. All those games are usually "Trade meaningless blows that healers top up right away until someone manages to fill their ult bar and make a play." That is so fucking shitty and boring to people like me. It makes most of the game, especially at higher levels, entirely revolve around ult usage. But the issue is, how do you fix it? Rivals in particular is filled with characters that I find fun to play but then all the fun of the game is sucked out for me because the stand behind your tank trading meaningless damage while building ults is just not mentally engaging to me. Deadlock strategy is and once I got to a higher rank what I described was no longer an issue except the occasional game with really mismatched ranks.

That's why in both games to this day you have new players confused why their team is yelling at them for "feeding the healers" because it's such a stupid unintuitive strategy element you don't get at first because the games are fundamentally flawed. There's no good gameplay design reason for this, but it's plainly obvious when you think about monetization.
The goal of a game is to be fun, but the goal of a casino is to extend engagement time (which this game will be, just look at the other valve games).
It's a long known open secret that player to player engagement online is a source of player lows. By this I mean one player necessarily wins and another loses. The player that loses the engagement has bad experience.
This is why they actually want to minimize player engagement with the enemy team.
But you can't lower it to zero, and you can't have them sit around and do nothing.
So, a MOBA resource and progression system to give you something to do.
All to extend an engagement time metric, which theoretically leads to more non-negative (or at least less extreme, more spread out) time in the casino, which leads to higher revenue.
It's the same reason why this is the first third person shooter valve has ever made. They see tf2 l4d and C's being first person as a lost opportunity to display player cosmetics. There's no deeper gameplay reason associated with it.
