Yes. Majora's Mask killed the Zelda franchise for me.

Kind of? A really good sequel that does something different can completely deroute the franchise.

Resident Evil 4 in particular is a standout.

Yes.

RE4 was literally so good it destroyed the franchise forever because Capcom has no idea how to evolve it beyond that. 20 years later and they're still chasing that high RE4 delivered

It just means that the concept has been polished, maybe even perfected and that any new entry would just be a repeat at best.
Basically time to make something new.

Going from Skyward Sword to Breath of the Wild forever changed Zelda

Sure. I think that it only matters if there is going to be more sequels down the line. As in, no future game can live up to the previous game.

Not exacly about being good, there is something i like to call "the Far Cry 3" effect, when a sequel does something big and yet feels like it also explored everything the concept had to offer in one go. To the point where every future game just feels like DLC
All these "Big" games from the last decade llike BOFTW and Elden Ring... What do we do with them? Make players explore another gigantic set of mountains, planes and caves... But different? Make the map bigger? It's obvious that the enemies will still feel the same no matter the design you give them and players already got tired of seeing them repeated over and over across the map.
On a small and somewhat linear games, small changes feel big, but in a open world where you need to be able to go wherever everything feels like you are building houses without walls, not matter how much cool stuff you put "inside", it can't be a house without walls

Far Cry 4 is the perfect example of this I think. It's pretty much identical to 3. The weapons, enemy roster is exactly the same apart from some minor additions. Just a more perfected version with the wingsuit being used more.

The sad part is that you could pinpoint what parts should be improved, but you also know what devs will never do
Look at Animal Crossing New Horizons, the only thing left to actually improved is the villagers AI, add more lines, more complex personalities, more development, make their interactions between thenselves and you more meaningful. But most of the fandom just cares about FOMO furniture, so they will just add more of that
Breath of the Wild? Needs actual dungeons! Elden ring? More uniqueness and maybe bigger dungeons (and please? No more dragos)! Bethesda games?... Quite honestly, they need a enema on the writing department and maybe make the world maps smaller! But none of these things are "marketable" decisions
