The irony to that is the original cartoony proportions was to make identifying the minis on the board easier. Yeah, it doesn't make sense that the guns are so comically big...until you're looking at it from a birds eye view overhead and need to see what a squad is equipped with quickly and easily. I honestly would just wish we went back to an earlier editions ruleset. Where vehicles had facings, you couldn't premeasure ranges so getting good at gauging distance beforehand was important, and templates were a thing so that how you placed your models was just as important as trying to hide 20 fuckers behind a big ass L shaped terrain piece that perfectly blocks LoS.

The real kicker? When 8th edition started "simplifying" the rules it was to make it easier to understand and play for both new and old players. We're now 2 coming on 3 editions past that and all the rules bloat that was gutted was just replaced with new rule bloat and bullshit "once per turn" super power cards that can drastically change the outcome of games when played. The power scale of the game has skyrocketed the last time I played.

I fucking hate it. I understand that these terrain kits are easy to pack up and deploy for events, great, but it's way too out there at this point. Boards are smaller than ever and they have to be precisely laid out to accommodate units that are simply way too big for the game outside of things like apocalypse.

The scalecreep is okay because I think the units look nicer with the size differences, but now we're starting to see normal human sized units end up on gigantic bases for no reason.

A lot of the upgrade kits are just to make the Primaris look like Space Marines. Because whoever designed those fucks didn't understand the artstyle or overall design of the setting. They just straight up don't belong, and they've been trying to bring them back to the general identity of the setting as a whole...which current GW is STILL trying to change anyway. You're several years late, anon. The Fall of Cadia was meant to be 40k's End Times, with it preceeding several major faction overhauls. The only ones that managed to push through are Marines, who got Primaris, and Eldar, who got Ynnari. Shortly after AoS's 1st edition crashed GW underwent an executive cleansing which led to all 40k plotlines being put on hold. This gave Marines a massive boost in sales as Primaris were a smash hit, while killing Eldar as a faction and allowing the other factions to remain fairly static. This was in part because GW was heavily rewriting AoS to unfuck it.

Yeah I figure it must be a way slower burn than WHFB. WHFB was actually dying when they decided to turn it around for AoS because they killed the game. The WHFB scene at my LGS was strangled in the cradle because you had to buy an obscene amount of models for every single army just to have a full army to play with. It was so bad that LoTR models and painting supplies sold more than fantasy models.

Now look at 40k, it's being set up in the same way. You have to buy more models than before for a 2k point game and the models are way more expensive. Them wanting to advance the setting so quickly probably means they'll find something major to kick off a full rewrite.

They've essentially made it so that 2k army lists are the defacto standard they balance the game around. Anything smaller might as well not exist. Remember when they sold those small Battleforce boxes that were a 500pt army? That was a great idea, and got people to try to the game out in a way that didn't involve the starter sets that had 2 half baked armies for different factions. They're more expensive and often times filled with clerical errors that cause major rules kerfuffles. The characters have largely been forgettable as well. Also this is when Primaris became a thing as well as Cawl effectively retconning a big plot point that's been with the setting since like 2nd edition.

Traveling through the warp could be like bonus levels where you just get to fuck up a bunch of chaos shit.
Make the final mission some gang bang between space marines, tau, and necrons, chaos, and you all in one big fucking mess of a fight.

When it found out the Ultramarines Chief Librarian was skimming it's mind for troop movements, it sent a custom grown Maleceptor to kill him and did the same thing.
