It's a great series, but you should skip DMC 2. It was made without the original creator's knowledge, by a B team that fundementally did not understand DMC 1.

I don't think it makes much difference either way. You won't even notice anything's wrong if you're not extremely familiar with the originals.
If you're a poorfag, I'd say emulate, then consider buying the collection for mod support when you inevitably want to replay DMC3 with future mechanics backported in.
