There is. Talk to a guard and ask for directions to the mage. While at Mysilia do enough quests to grab the tax box so you can just pay taxes from home. Each quest gives 1 influence which can be traded for furniture tickets at the secretary. IIRC the tax box costs something like 4 tickets.

Normally death reduces your stats/loses gear and money. So there is a penalty and you want to avoid bumrushing into bad situations but its more akin to one of those like wuxia self training number go up games in Roguelike format than a hard win/loss condition.

Once you get your identify skill high enough you'll start to automatically identify items in your inventory over time. Higher level items will still need to be identified manually, but stuff like spellbooks will get identified automatically.
Every town will have someone who can identify stuff, and you can get one to live in your base to make it easier.
There's also an identify spell.

To use magic you need stocks of the spells you want to cast which come from spellbooks. You also get some spell stock at random every time you sleep. There are feats to make this more effective.
You don't need to cast your spells manually, just have your axe equipped or something and click on an enemy to attack them. You'll cast random spells automatically. You can blacklist certain spells from being autocast like this if you want to conserve the spell stock, but you're gonna want to level those spells anyways by casting them.

To conserve spell stock you can use a Cane. It's a weapon that shoots magic balls without using spells. Operates like a bow except it uses mana instead of arrows.

I think tax evasion just lowers your karma and makes you a criminal. Early on this is bad, but later in the game it's easier to live at permanent -100 karma so you can just steal whatever you want from towns with no consequences.
Everyone will attack you if you enter towns, but if you cast Incognito they leave you alone, so you can still use merchants and stuff.

Acquiring god rewards is going to be capped by your Faith skill when you first start and it can take several in-game months with auto-prayer to raise the skill high enough that you can get your pet and weapon.

Raising your piety with any given god is easy if you know how to do it but raising the actual Faith skill is a massive grind if you want to level it beyond your daily prayer because offerings barely give any Faith. One of the easiest ways to level it is the corpse meat hammer alchemy method which was nerfed shortly after release but even that is going to require thousands of corpses for a single Faith level. Aside from this always keep an eye out for Faith scrolls in magic shops.

One of the major inspirations for Elona/Elin is ADOM. The predecessor, Elona, is a more feature-rich game but can be a lot harder to get into. You'll have to keep in mind that a lot of additions to the game came from the fanbase and only exist in Elona+ and a lot of the stuff is kind of polarizing.

In general you want to ignore the basic stat feats early on unless you know what you're doing. Speed is an exception because of how important it is in general but even that can be ignored if you're playing a Fairy or you're rushing for a fast mount.

Gourmet is vital once you get into food min/maxing but it's fine to ignore it in the very early game since you likely won't even have the funds/materials/recipes to make good food. Model Follower is also very important for keeping your Faith raised(you may need to learn the Faith skill first which should be done ASAP) and the second level can be taken once you start getting followers. The first level of Dream Waker is good no matter what class you're playing because some enemies are far easier to handle with magic. Party Animal and Lonely Soul are great if you want to do a solo or minimal follower playthrough. Lucky can be hit or miss depending on your weapon; Luck is an extremely valuable stat with anything that uses a low number of dice rolls but falls off in value hard with high dice rolls.

He gave up trying maybe two years ago when he subcontracted the work to various people, he didn't edit the video himself, I suspect he doesn't write them either. He just does the voice and get the cash.
