The problem is that Communism tends to view conflict lines as purely material, when there are also immaterial lines of conflict arising from other kinds of status. Anyone who thinks formal equality would suffice to create an equal society only needs to look at a school class or a prison population to quickly learn that humans are quite good at forming hierarchies along other kinds of status differentials, e.g. regarding who is tall, physically strong, handsome, eloquent, particularly gifted, etc. - much of the Socialist efforts by the intelligentsia are often an underhanded form of status competition, to subdue a rival elite; reduce the value of capital and grow their own relative status in return.
