7, 8, and 9 have the same party system. The best of them is generally considered to be 8. 10 doesn't go back to solo Adol, but it's just him and one other character in a duo instead.

People can be around to help in an NPC fashion. Hell, Dogi's always been /ourguy/. But forcing a series that made its name on simple, speedy action to slow the fuck down to implement FRIENDS as a core gameplay mechanic seems tone-deaf.

Until you get to the bosses that all use the exact same pattern of "attack you for 20 seconds, then allow you to attack for 1 second" that later games are way fucking better about, when people glorify the gameplay of ark engine they're really thinking about how it feels to mow down mobs in those games, which admittedly feels great
