It is definitely the best but it's still the absolute bare minimum. For 3D systems I expect the baseline to be Dolphin/Duckstation/PCSX2 and nothing comes even close for the N64. Has anyone tried out that whole "turn your ROM into a PC port" thing?

Nobody cares about N64 emulation because there's no good games on the console. If there were some good games maybe someone would dedicate some time to solving this problem. At this point even original Xbox emulation is ahead of 64 emulation.

You see, most "normal" N64 emulators, are just half emulators.
>but an emulator is an emulator, you can't say it's only half!
Well T.J "Henry" Anon, you see, the nintendo 64 is compromised of two main processing units, the main CPU, the R4300i, a well known and understood chip, and the RCP, a massive insane pile of functionality from hell that took SGI 6 months to calculate with their supercomputers.
This second chip was barely understood at all until recently, and it runs code, there are "few programs" programs for it in total.
So the idea of the half emulators is to skip emulating these programs entirely, and instead just recreate the programs for the PC.
You emulate the main CPU, and then the game code talks with YOUR code, thinking it is talking to the co-processor.
However, 20 fucking years trying this approach and we never got it to work 100% correctly because there are small variations, bugs, developers exploiting rendering quirks, direct memory access wankery and all that.
And a LOT of gay drama between HLE retard devs that means HLE will never work.

Then there's the work of angrylion, a random ass dude that actually emulates the RCP, based on an incomplete work by the MAME devs, and bought to perfection to people that ported it to vulkan (the so called parallel plugins).
So, if you want to actually emulate the N64, get something based on parallel, like simple64, or the retroarch plugins.
You will need a really powerful machine to pull it off tho, like a Ryzen 2200g

N64 games run like ass and look like shit on real hardware. Why the fuck would anyone want to emulate that accurately when games could instead run at high resolutions and actually playable framerates?
Sure there's plenty of speedrunning bullshit that relies on shitty framerates or memory manipulation that doesn't work on emulators, but out of the nearly 400 games in the N64 library there's only like 1 game that's truly unplayable on software emulators and the rest are genuinely better off than on real hardware.
Anonymous No.718877179 >>718878163

Low fidelity assets never look good when rendered at higher resolution/clarity and some visual effects like dithering also rely on poor image quality in order to even exist.
That's why I run Dolphin at 1xIR, 8xSSAA, and Bilinear upscaling. Unfortunately for N64 the best you can do is just 1xIR with the console's native AA.

Because it is the most useless bit configuration supported in the system
1bit for controllers
4bits for textures
8bits for cartridges AND textures
9bits for the internal RAM
15bit for color values
16bit for depth buffer, SIMD data, textures, and a shitload of other users
18bit for color values + AA coverage
24bits for depth buffer/colors
32bits for fucking everything
64bits as optional CPU precision that only make it slower for no practical gain for games
128bits as SIMD in the co-processor.

It supported '64 bit' processing, but not really because it was slow and balls to do that so everybody, including Nintendo themselves, used 32bit processing. Basically it was a marketing gimmick to make the console sound super advanced for the time.

I been emulating N64 since the beginning.
I literally used ultraHLE on my 3Dfx card when it was new, and N64 always been a shitshow, until some angrylion dude decided to not make it a shit show.
And i observed the posts he did in emulation forums because it was pretty entertaining to see.
I even tried to hack the plugin to do multi-core support... with results like pic related.

But well, he succeeded and now N64 emulation is actually good.
