The literal only hope for the MMO genre's future is the Riot MMO, which may or may not be in permanent development hell.
Everything they make is a hit, they have almost two decades of lore and stories to anchor on to, incredible talent, and limitless funds.

Until then it's just the current titans, all older than the average gamer.
>OSRS (2004/2007/2013 (however the hell you want to classify it))

When you consider the outcome for a typical MMO, it seems like the functional purpose of the mode MMO development team is not to deliver a game to market, but rather to convert investor funds into food, housing, and student debt repayment for software engineers and middle managers.

Dunno. Probably OSRS right now in terms of weighted rating.
I personally have been getting into maplestory. It's... going alright. I'm honestly surprised since I expected a lot worse, but bosses are fun. Progressing to the next one or the next difficulty as a solo player gives a nice sense of accomplishment even without stupid rare boss items dropping.
I think my only major gripe is the need to grind mobs for hours and the skullfucking upgrade system they have in place. Cubing sucks, starforce sucks. I feel ashamed that I have to humor it and get a feeling of relief and dopamine when I get a good hit with gear upgrading.
Anyway, we'll likely never get a good new mmo. I think at this point the ever aging player bases just settle into whichever game they find most comfort in.

Ashes of Creation is also in beta hell. Basically it's nigh impossible and ridic expensive to launch a new MMO by today's standars. There's an expectation it needs to have a shitton of content AND cater to a community AND be ready for constant new content AND look good.
All the ones you've mentioned started initially with very little and has built up over time. That can't happen nowadays because shareholders will be expecting big massive profit from the getgo.

thats actually why i can't play modern osrs anymore desu. i played original runescape (i guess it's called runescape classic now?) from like 2002 and played for years after and the most fun was just chatting shit with people and making friends while fishing or cutting yews or whatever
i don't blame the grand exchange cause it's a huge QOL feature but back then having to go to the forums to find people to trade with, or sit in varrock spamming til you found a buyer or seller, those were good times and created a community
real problem is modern gamers don't want to chat in MMOs which is sad but at least we had the good times back in the day to remember

The problem is they keep releasing new BIS too frequently, and the next boss/raid always has to be "better", so the combined power creep from every aspect adds up to end-game just being completely FUBAR'd.
That's why every boss is now more of a tile-rhythm game than an actual fight.

People said this when OSRS came out, but they all very quickly realized that it's fucking SHIT in current year.

Nobody has time for that now, people don't want to spend 3 hours selling their lobsters and buying some more potions. They want to play the game. The playerbase unanimously went from "no GE, reee" to "maybe something like the GE?" (a marketboard that listed offers, so players could then contact eachother) to "full-blown fuckin GE again".
Then nostalgiafags slowly trickled back in, forgetting or unaware of how crap it was without the GE, talking about how good the game would be without it (proven wrong).

There will never be "the next big MMO" OP, just give up already. MMOs are extremely expensive to develop and run and take years if not a decade to develop. All of this means you either need investors who are willing to have their money hanging for a decade or a stable company behind it that can lose millions on a project a year during the development without issue, and all of this gambles on the game not being a flop on release or run into a wall during development. You can't convince an investor or an executive to takes those risks.

it never really died, its the only MMO that has been consistently growing in player count over the last ~10 years. The game has wide appeal due to the simplicity of the combat system (with a high skill ceiling and low floor, there's something in it for everyone), skilling systems, social features, good content creators, different game modes like ironman mode, actually active PvP scene, and most importantly a horizontal and vertical hybrid progression where gear from 5 years ago is still very good or even still BiS today.

This is mostly a false-perception from the western AAA that refuse to try other approaches. Video games don't need 1000 people, all from california. Nor does every MMO have to be "AAA". Runescape proves this over and over again. You could develop a focused MMO with less than 50 people in a place with relatively sane cost of living.

I think a VR MMO would work well and fix a lot of social problems, most people would use voice chat since is hard to write in VR and in a town it would be full of people just talking to each other instead of the barren desert that is any MMO today were everyone is just talking in private chats or AFK.
Also allowing UGC content would be dangerous but I think it would be cool, you could have a furry and anime girl and joe with his regular avatar all together doing dungeons, all uploaded by them or made in an in-game editor.

The cost is too prohibitive to make without pandering to retarded investors/cutting corners.
The scope too large for passionate indie devs.

Devs have to stop designing games for 40+ year old raid loggers, it's a stagnant playerbase. PvP is the only way forward for the genre.

That isn't true at all, there are plenty of great PvP games out there that don't fit those categories. Just because you don't like New World PvP for example doesn't mean it's bad, it's all about how deeply you want to engage with it. The fun of a PvP system isn't always apparent at a glance, you often have to spend a great deal of time interacting with it before it clicks.
Anonymous No.718892448 >>718893176

The problem is that mmo combat is rooted in boss encounters, raids essentially.

The allure of PvP games is reaction timing and twitch gameplay. That’s why Fortnite and Apex and League and Siege are all the top PvP games.

There’s no point in making PvP modes in MMOs. It’s like making it in Sekiro or Ninja Gaiden, it doesn’t work.

All the MmO devs waste their time implementing PvP modes.

I'd say an MMO without PvP is a pretty hollow experience, the genre is all about interacting with other players. If you can't even kill them then you're leaving a lot of game on the table.
A fantasy world without any antagonists or ability to solve conflicts between players through violence is inorganic and dull. WoW is the largest MMO ever and it had a massive PvP scene, remember warcraft movies back in the early days? It was full of PvP videos with edgy metal music playing in the background, even Runescape was all about PvP during those days. When did we all turn into a bunch of hand-holding PvE faggots?

You have to remember that WoW was the Fortnite of 2004.

PvP works in MMOs when it’s done in a non traditional way: Faction wars, capturing outposts, bounties. But, the entire game has to based around it. You either have raids or an interlinked open world with PvP.

The idea though of having a 15 minute match against another group of people, whether tab targeting or action combat, is just awful. I’m not gonna rate the execution of something based on whether a 13 year old put Meteora in the background to it.

I agree that MMOs should strike a good balance between PvE and PvP, I also believe that segregating them is bad for the game. PvP should simply be a natural part of the world, not something to be stowed away in a walled off instance so it can't hurt the feefees of dragonslayers. The early days of Archeage is an example of PvP done right in an MMO, it was the lifeblood of that game. It made trade runs exciting, the naval battles were crazy, the criminal system was hilarious. I really wish we could have something like that again.

I don't even bother playing MMOs without some form of open-world PvP. It adds massively to the feeling of the world. When it's just PvE mobs, the world feels boring and "safe", add PvP and it adds tension where the world feels more dangerous and alive. People always say "but then zergs just run around killing everyone", but that's such a rarity in my experience. It's a bad game, but when NW launched I constantly ran around with PvP on, and in the 2 months I played at launch I got attacked by more than 1 player twice. Once when I ran across a guild doing the PvP territory quests (so my bad), and the second time when I stumbled across 2 players from a random guild who I actually beat 1v2.
