There were less games back then so people flocked to the good or popular ones. 1m current players exclusively from NA and parts of Europe is an achievement even by today's standards, and this was almost 20 years ago.

Because it was a great series of games with Bungie, same reason people popped off on CoD4 a couple months later, they were the kings of FPS at the time, especially in a genre that had been stagnating outside of Halo and early CoD/BF, which didn't have anywhere near the level of players they do now.

Halomania was a real thing, a single franchise carried Xbox, the releases of Halo 2 and Halo 3 were practically cultural events. On Halo 3's release half the boys in my entire year went into town to buy it, it was huge. This was just before CoD popped off with 4 as well
