Switch 2 still uses cartridges, which coat a lost more than Blu-ray discs. They're also classed as readable media rather than optical media, so they carry wildly different tariffs.

Also digital versions of Switch 2 games are generally cheaper than physical versions.

Basic supply and demand.
Cheap vidya is abundant and digital copies means there are no supply limitations. Average game has massively decreased in value, making it harder to raise prices despite inflation.
Food takes just as much work to produce and is just as finite as it was back then. Prices have risen with inflation.

If you grew up gaming in the 90s, you probably rented more than owning the games outright. Vidya games were never 'cheap,' and owning one meant you either just had a birthday, Xmas, or you did something incredible (like making the Honor Roll). Games like Fortnite ruined people's impressions of the true cost of gaming.

If you didn't know, separate/standalone boxed copies of SMW are actually a rare collector's item due to the loose game being bundled with so many systems.
I mean, be honest, how often have you seen a boxed copy of SMW?

I miss renting games. If I could still rent games I'd actually get a console again.

Kids these days are spoiled for choice. Unless your parents were rich or you were a paperboy/babysitter (girls rarely played games but I know some had hidden super nintendos) then you rarely got games. Rentals were your only option. Was the game you rented shit? Too bad, it's yours for the next 3 days so you better make the most of it.

They're no longer making physical disks, going to school and being hired has been streamlined, and the video game market has never been bigger wtih all the ingame purchases that exist.

ground beef isn't $10 where I am, but it might be overpriced in high cost of living places. That said it's crept quite higher at 5 dollars and change generally, when I remember early post covid or so it was 2.99-3.99.

I am just lucky that my BJs wholesale retailer has my sirloin steaks at 6.99 or so. Too expensive to have on their own but they are perfect in diced up form with fried rice or as tacos. Thanks for listening to my ted talk.

Nintendo was so expensive was because, in NA, Nintendo was basically a semi-monopoly. If you wanted good games, go to Nintendo (what you think SEGA will make it?!). Which inflated Nintendo's ego to rise prices.
Then PlayStation came along and offered a better system with cheaper games. Now that gamers (and developers are no longer bound to Nintendo (and SEGA crapped themselves), they jumped ship immediately.

Even before Apps were a thing, $.99 in 1980-1990 was suddenly $3.50 in 2010.

The simple answer is that prices are going up while wages remain flat. We've been in a recession since 2008 and while the "Economy recovered" (LMAO) we truly never recovered and are sleep walking into an economic meltdown because the governments are kicking the cans down the road hoping the bubbles (like AI) don't burst all in rapid succession.

Japan's rice crisis is notable. They're having to go into government stores of rice to supply it and even then people still can't fucking afford it. As soon as funny lether jacket man's AI chips bubble bursts, America is fucked.

Yes, because of inflationary monetary policy. You push more currency into the economy with deficit spending -> it's chasing the same amount of goods -> prices rise.

All the "benefits" of inflation, like cheap debt, are in fact simply subsidized by what is in effect a hidden tax on the working class. Investors get cheap debt to buy up more stocks, subsidized by devaluing YOUR paycheck, and you don't get ANY of the stocks that you effectively paid for.

And then you're told that a stable money supply would be bad for the economy even though the US had that during its economic golden age in the late 19th century.

Ground Beef as a physical product
>1 pound is still a pound
>Selling to multiple people means you need to produce multiple pounds of meat

>An increased market scales poorly due to a large percentage of costs being in raising the product, not in processing
Video Games
>Majority of cost is put into development of a single product that is then copied and sold

Inflation is a lagging indicator and also price gouging.
But to be fair, democrats are bought and sold by corporations too so when cracking down on price gouging was suggested, they lost their mind.
Same reason they'd rather side with trump rather than Zorhan Mamdani even though his policies are extremely popular with voters. Because god forbid having a government run grocery store to drive down price gouging is going to cause communism to rise.

Not to mention in the US at least the last big bill Congress passed is gonna drive up utility bills like electricity cause of how they are pulling out from other sources like natural energy. That's generally way you put together a basket of essential items to sort of average out the comparison. But yes, if you want very accurate values, you need to go one by one. In general, what shows is that luxury goods have become much cheaper, especially home electronics, while essential items like food, utilities, shelter have become much more expensive. And wages have not increased nearly as much. So essentially, it's still true that workers are getting ass raped.

The NES sold 60 million which is still more than Xbox other than the 360. There were still million sellers, and the attach rate was 8, which is actually on the higher side even compared to more modern consoles. When you consider how overpriced the games were, how few developers there were per game, and generally shorter development cycles, it must have been pretty profitable for the competent game studios. Employee wages were also lower because gaming wasn't as big.

Most of the third world got richer, at least rich enough to be able to afford meat. Meanwhile environmental policies, animal rights and the like made meat production more expensive.

Honestly I think the price of meat will stabilize somewhere around $30 (2025 dollars) in about 10 years time which is when the amount of meat eaters will peak. Afterwards aging population, trendy veganism and alternatives will most likely push price down again.

In the 1970s "what things cost" (costs) and "what people make" (wages) diverged.

Wages up until 2020 were still increasing, but at a much lower rate than costs. Costs, meanwhile increased at an ever escalating scale. Post 2020 wages stagnated (unless you're already making millions, the economy improved for the people that didn't need more money). The wages of average and lower classes stagnated, or dropped, while costs post 2020 shot up in just five years more than they had over the prior 10 years.

Entertainment and luxury products are the first products to get cut when people can't afford things.

Food, an absolute necessity, can continue to increase in price (and eat up the money entertainment/luxury goods would have made in their place) because people need food to live.

People do not need a new Nintendo game to live. As such the food market (and other markets that people need to live) can start eating the profits that the everyday average lower classes no longer buy because they have no choice but pay the prices for food and other necessity products if they want to continue living.

This is meant to lead to a cycle where 80% of the population works, works, and works more until the companies have no choice but to let them eat, drink, and sleep. But as soon as the minimal requirements are meant they get to do more work.

Nintendo time would take away from working or refueling to do more work.

The masses need no joy.

The masses only need to work and serve.

So games and other luxuries and entertainments will have to either keep their prices down (and eventually completely free making their money through other means), or become true luxury products only meant for the rich. Because the workers will not be able to afford it.

In truth it will eventually get so bad that the entertainment companies will have to find a way to provide entertainment to people while they're sleeping.

Some things become more expensive over time due to greedy bastards trying to fuck you over / get richer, like rent and property.
