Might as well use this thread to ask. Any good horror-focused VNs out there? I tried reading Gore Screaming Show and it was pretty tame and boring, despite the extreme sounding title. I'm not looking to jerk off, I'm not interested in any ero-guro shit, maybe this is the wrong medium for me. Already read Saya no Uta and thought it was great.

Umineko would be better if it just cut out all of the hacky meta shit about mystery stories, it would be like half the length and way tighter while still retaining the core of what makes it special. Ryukishi is just such a sped he can't help himself, Higurashi suffers from this too when he gets into WW2 autism but thankfully it doesn't bog down the length quite as much.

The stuff with the goats in ep8 definitely left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. I've never read a story that seemed like it was blatantly insulting its own readership before. That said, VNs have got to be the most padded medium of all time, I don't think ryukishi is alone in that at least.

I don't think the sequence of events stands up to scrutiny in believability very well. So are you going to praise it for its mysteries? There's a lot of silly ones there too, though older mystery stories have their fair share of ridiculous ones as well. No, I think the strongest message it has is the metanarrative about telling stories.

Considering that the last episode is Battler trying his best to prevent Ange from reading Eva's diary since she can't handle the truth and would kill herself over it, I don't think the story promotes suicide at all.

Before i read this i though the witches were going to be a secret society that was going to conduct a mass human sacrifice for whatever end.

Umineko is interesting because people in Japan figured out the entire plot around chapter 3 and it made R07 utterly assmad. All the meta shit that comes after is a direct response to the japanese equivalent of 4chan calling him a hack nonstop. It's also why there's a character having a melty about annoying mystery fans in its later half.

This is why serialization was a mistake. We could have had a comfy, consistent, non-schizo story. So many manga suffer from serialization too, I think the reason they so often have bad endings is because their ratings tanked and the publisher made them end things abruptly with no fanfare. The other issue is sales being too good despite the author being out of ideas and just coasting for volumes with nothing interesting happening, formulaic as shit rote storytelling, just so the money will keep rolling in.

It still hit the same beats that I've liked about the rest of WtC. It's why I've been somewhat dismissive of the idea that BT was his ghost writer or something. Chiru likely would have turned out better with him still alive but one of my main takeaways from Ciconia was that Ryukishi still had it what it took to get me really engrossed in his characters and story. I can't say for sure he wouldn't have dropped the ball later on but I was at least interested in where it was going. Now I'll probably never get to see that.
