When will we get a new MMO that completely saves gaming?
Quickdraw McAnon No.718885337
It's not the game that will save the genre.
It's the players.
(First).

Never. MMOs had their shot before social media was a huge thing.

I'm starting to realize that social media isn't just killing MMOs, it's killing the entirety of video games as a medium. For most people scrolling your social feed algorithm is just way more addictive than playing vidya, younger generations aren't buying or playing games, why would they?

MMOs are inherently risky and don't have high success rates, most game projects that had a chance of going the MMO route went the Gatcha game route instead due to the higher return on investment potential.

>younger generations aren't buying games
They're not "buying" games because all the games they like are free to play and they just pay for microtransactions in them instead.
>younger generations aren't playing games
This is untrue but ties into your point about social media. What do you think a lot of social media content is? Videos, clips, and streams of video games.

What about the term "mmo" specifically makes it appealing to you, anon? We have chat lobbies in many multiplayer games. mmo Raids go from 24~40 people in highly scripted events, which I consider far less than 'massive' - especially by Fortnite's 100p standards. What's your standard, OP?

We won't. It peaked at EverQuest/WoW and will not be getting better.

this game was god awful, you're better off just downloading a single player project for ultima online or warcraft

Sure you can't just point to one thing as the answer to everything going on, it's all a concoction of various factors. But the numbers for engagement do appear to be down quite significantly. There was also a recent Japanese study on the average age of players per franchise, the results are worrying.
To pretend social media has nothing to do with it is bonkers, low attention spans are directly linked to social media. When your brain is wired for this sort of dopamine drip regular video games can't compete. Watching kids switch their 3 seconds of attention between scrolling their tiktok feed and playing video games simulaniously is sad. They barely have the awareness to realize they've gotten a headshot in Roblox, how do you expect someone like that to follow the story of Expedition 33? Vidya of the future is gonna look very different from what we're used to.

What is with zoomers obsession to MMOs. They are protogacha at best. Literal slot machines. Play the local multiplayer games from Gen 5 and the online multiplayer from gen 6 and 7 and then come back to me.

The MMO audience is in their 40s to 70s. They've moved on.
