DKC3 has always received more hate than it deserves simply because of Kiddy Kong, the overall "Canadian" aesthetic, and the fact that most people consider it the "worst" in the DKC trilogy. It may be the worst, but it's still a very good game and only speaks to the insanely high quality of the trilogy when even its worst game is still very good.

Which is crazy because in each game, NONE of the Kongs have an actual personality. All of their details are described with words in the instruction booklet, they aren't apparent in the games.

So I thought cool, a whole new DKC game I haven't played before and ordered it from eBay in 2003 or something. And when I started playing I could immediately tell something was off. DKC3 really only added Bear Coins and Banana Birds.
The Brothers Bear trading quest was just an extension of the bear coins. That's like docking points from OoT because it had eye drops and saws in your inventory in service of Biggoron.
And the Banana birds were always confined to the relatively small world map, with a single bird per individual world hub.
The cogs were simply end of level "rewards" from Krematoa, a plot device to fight the final boss.
The skis and patch from world bosses were again just plot devices in service of moving you to the next world. It's not really a collectible if it's mandetory to progress. It's just a reskinned key.

>DK Coins
>Bonus Coins
>Bear Coins
>Banana Birds
4 things you had to actively go out of your way to grab.
Overrated, just like the moaning and agonizing over DK64.

Bear coins are essentially a replacement for the banana coins in DKC2. So the only ACTUAL new collectible are the banana birds.
