This is just about the one time you can play either version. The remake is a copy/paste with modern graphics and some new content. Nothing is downgraded.

Play the remake. I love both versions but I found this just as charming. The new cutscenes are a really nice touch too.

Yeah the balance changes were my main issue I had with it. I don't mind easy RPGs (I loved the original SMRPG after all), but they made it so basic attacks are so strong in the remake that there's almost no reason to use special attacks over them. Makes battles more boring.

The extra bosses in postgame are cool, but over quickly.
