Because people who actually lived with "owning" physical instead of talking about owning physical got tired of constantly dealing with customer support and waiting months for a shitty Bethesda clone RPG they can't refund without waiting for another half a year for the jeets at customer support to understand what you want to do. God forbid the retard repackaging and reselling dics didn't check for the manual so you're stuck without a verification code and you have to deal with customer support and wait for another half a year to get a new manual.

Unironically, there's no benefit in using a disc over owning a digital license to a game in the current gen. If they take the game down from the store, you can still re-download it and any DLC you got before they did it; and if it's multiplayer game that got the servers shut down, or Destniy 2, you disc is effectively useless.

>Why is everyone so obsessed with digital games nowadays?
It's a much easier model for distributers and developers so it's the only option they present to consumers and therefore the only thing most consumers even think to want.

This has it's benefits. A game fully distributed on a CD can never be updated so any bugs that ship with the game exist in perpetuity in the game. I have never, and will never, complete Enter the Matrix without cheatcodes because the helicopter tower fight is forever broken.

This has it's drawbacks. Every single new release is destined to be riddled with bugs because developers now have a fraction of the pressure to fix them before "shipping".

Either way you as the consumer never truly "owned" the video game and most games shipped on disks required a valid license key to play.

Server shut down is inevitable for every digital service. You still get to keep the copy of a game that you've already downloaded, every corpo kike who tells you that you don't own it is lying and can be sued. Also, physical is not preservation, *piracy* and emultaion is. However, blocking private servers, custom clients and emulation is the real problem.

Wait no thats not right, the alternative is owning a digital game.
Weird how you framed it as this sort of definitive black and white matter of fact statement that benefits the interests of corporations at the detriment of consumers and pretended there was no alternative. Weird that you did that.

My argument is actually that digital is more convenient than physical. You'd know this if you were capable of reading above a subsaharan level. The conversation you're trying to force in order to showcase your awesome subsaharan understanding of the world is not the conversation we were having. The conversation we were having is if a physical distribution is better than digital. Now I can see that you're very emotionally invested and banked your ego on your narrative so I'll give you my answer to your question despite this not being the conversation you butted into. I would prefer to own my games and not a license. Are you happy now lad? I would also like to park my car wherever I want and modify it with cosmetic flamethrowers without the police on my ass but I can't because I only own the license to my car. In this case I would prefer a physical representation of a car but a digital representation in a video game is also ok. Now shoo shoo. Take your hysteric estrogenic interrogation to your ghetto pals.

>Anime/Manga
I own a far larger physical collection of most things than everyone else here, especially this. Digital is better.
Fuck changing discs, and I'd rather have the manga's two pages laid out on my monitor rather than having to spread open the actual book and get it under the right lighting.
Also, I do use exclusively remuxes or high quality encodes, so I'm not skimping on quality like a lot of you faggots.
>Music
MP3 players won decades ago. I own vinyl, never listen to it, display purposes only, same with cassettes.
>Books
An ereader can hold every book I want to read at a given moment, and I can read them in book equivalent quality (on the eyes) without worrying about surrounding lighting for the experience. Digital wins.
>Video games
Digital fucking wins.
I don't want to own several consoles or have to hoard a bunch of fucking cheap plastic cases for a video game. I'd rather just have the games I'm playing at the moment installed and ready to go, I want to be able to switch from Final Fantasy V to Dragon Quest V to Tetris at a moment's notice. This isn't a dopamine thing, it's a convenience thing, and the convenience part is that I click a single button and it happens, and I don't have all this gay shit on my shelf.

The only physical games I have left are
>My complete Resident Evil collection spanning from 1996 to 2023 (not buying anymore physical copies for this, I'm done)
>My Silent Hill 1-4 physical copies
>My old Japanese imports of MGS3's Subsistence box set and the 20th Anniversary set
>Dragon Quest V for the Super Famicom
>Kinnikuman 2nd Generations for the GameCube
>My original imports of the PS3 RGG titles
>a complete Dragon Quest DS/3DS collection
That is all I will ever want or need. Digital is preferable, always.

Discs are slow.
Discs are a point of failure.
Discs are immutable, so you always have to do a post-install patch routine.
Discs are limited in storage.
That's just the consumer side. From a publisher side, boxes and discs represent an even bigger gamble and addition to the budget. Those discs and boxes have to be printed, and stores have to buy them. When you can list your game on Steam and just pay publishing fees on units sold, it comes out cheaper. It also guarantees no stock problems that slow down your sales. It also allows you to push fixes easier. There are Daggerfall discs out there with the FunLove virus. There's no patch on a depot that will fix that those discs got shipped.

>have to swap discs if I want to play a different game
>I have all this clutter gathering dust and taking up space when I'm not playing other games
>have to worry about the disc getting used up or scratched or the data on the disc getting corrupted
Meanwhile digital
>if I want to get a game I just pop open steam
>billions of games to choose from - old and new, indie, small studio and AAA, all kinds of genres, both niche and mainstream
>pick several and add them to my account
>can install and play them right away
>can just switch to a different game easily
>nothing takes up space
I will never understand normalfags worshipping physical games.

Games I paid for over a decade ago are still there and I can redownload them easily and they'll be in a fresh, clean state. To me that is owning. If you're obsessed this much, pirate or use GoG.

I think the only reason people prefer physical is just for the novelty of having a disc. Having the game downloaded is superior in every way. Not to mention a lot of new physical discs don't even have the game on them, they just have a code that lets you download it from the distributor servers.
Obviously tying yourself to a platform that has the power to take your games away and ban you from being able to play them is a poor decision if you care about longevity, but you can just pirate them instead to solve that problem.

Having the box for a video game does not meaningfully change my experience playing in the same way that, say, holding a physical book changes the feeling of reading it compared to on a screen.
I have no interest in dedicating a large amount of physical space to a video game collection when it doesn't affect how I enjoy it. I willingly have multiple book shelves full of books because the physical presence of a book affects how I enjoy it.

Because to them a 32 cent lump of polycarbonate pressed into a circle is a "game". They conflate the distribution method with ownership of some immortal game license they get to keep in perpetuity.

In short: you can't share them with a friend and AT THE SAME TIME playing with him, so you can't even pay half the price upfront. Digital items are generally always available and often discounted, while physical items disappear, and retailers or scalpers take over with higher prices. Then there's the fact that not everyone has the space to store them, but that's a minor issue.

The downsides of digital are the higher risk of account theft, bans, and therefore exclusion from your library. And obviously, you can't resell them; at most, you get a refund.

>Unironically, there's no benefit in using a disc over owning a digital license to a game in the current gen.
In 20 years a digital store front may be gone entirely and you will be unable to buy the games on it. You cannot get Wii digital games from its store, or even redownload your purchases on it anymore, and that's less than two decades old. The same will inevitably happen to all platforms.

Before you say
>but modern games need patches
Very few games even today outright require a day one patch to run, yes, even for Microsoft and Sony consoles. That shit is a myth. Yeah a lot of them do have day one patches, but they will still work and function without those downloaded.

>>718898942
>Steam, Sony, Nintendo etc. going down and you losing access to your entire library is highly, highly unlikely.
Literally the opposite is true. It's not unlikely, it's inevitable. Do you sincerely believe that Nintendo and Sony are going to keep the Wii U and PS3 store fronts up? Most consoles from that era or earlier don't even allow you to purchase new games anymore, just redownload, and some like the Wii have had their services shutdown entirely.
