There's random shit like nuclear material, gold, etc that can be hard to deliberately find or buy. You just sort of stumble across it when you shove your pockets full of trash.

It doesn't work fine for gameplay at all, that's the issue. A wounding automatic pipe rifle will outperform assault rifles, miniguns, SMG's.
RNG across an explosive minigun or combat shotgun and the only thing that's remotely going to get in your way is the infinite-level-scale enemies.
Fallout has never had magical damage from perks, the classics had some that added 1-2 damage per attack, but that's absolutely nothing compared to FO4's nonsense.
Weapons using the same ammo but different damage also was more sensible as they were DIFFERENT weapons of the same class, more advanced rifles or unique variants with visual uniqueness.
