What is it called when you're an 'acquaintance' to a video game? Imagine you know the franchise, the characters, stories, etc. But you never played it to form any attachment to it.

That's how I feel towards Metal Gear Solid. Does that just mean said video game is iconic?

It's called cultural osmosis or social osmosis.
A common example would be that pretty much every person in the western world knows that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father even if they've never seen a star wars movie.
