I am playing PS2 and Gamecube games and very few of them have aged well. The only good game is Burnout 3.

FFX, DQVIII, Xenosaga, Mario Sunshine, Twilight Princess are right there.

healthy AA market
AAA tier games still made by one studio instead of ten or twenty support studios
games actually complete on disc
live service slop wasn't a thing outside of MMOs
budgets were smaller and development cycles were shorter so experimenting with weird ideas or letting an unknown director do his thing was feasible and even profitable

It's less the consoles themselves and more market shifts completely fucked up the entire industry coinciding with the following generation.
>Shift to HDMI increasing dev costs
>PS3 having a more complex architecture than PS2 also increasing dev costs
>Global recession fucking everyone over financially
>Increased flooding of the industry by private equity, turning studios into slop machines so line can go up
>Shift to digital distribution allowing for microtransactions and day 1 patches
>Western media convincing major Jap studios to stop making good games and just make western garbage instead
>Nintendo focusing on dumb control gimmicks handcuffing good gameplay
>Vista fucking up the PC side
Really the early 00s were the last hurrah for the entire industry before it turned into the garbage we see today.

Cubies trying to shoehorn the shitcube in with the golden age will never not be funny. It's the first times the cracks were starting to show with how utterly lazy, barebones, and lacking it was in both features and software to play
