Why do modern games do this? Why do I need to be told to follow mom? Is it not obvious what I'm supposed to do just by playing? I truly abhor to the whole objective based structure of modern video games. Resident Evil isn't giant open world game where you can get lost from wondering and fucking around. Why do I need objectives popping up on the screen? Additionally, it's a survival horror game; having objectives pop up takes away from the suspense of trying to figure things out.

Keep in mind much of the third world is now playing video games, both in the third world and in the US/Europe.

video games are no longer made for people who actually like playing video games

But that's always been the case, but older games didn't have objectives and objective markers pop up all over the place. Imagine playing RE2 and or 3 and having objective points all over the place.

>Find red diamond
>Turn Statue around
>Exit the police station

It takes the fun and thrill of the discovering how to get out of a labyrinthine maze while getting chased by the undead

drives me nuts too. it's hilarious when you're told what to do when there's literally no alternative
ie you get locked in an arena and a boss will start attacking you, and it says 'objective: kill [boss name]', like no fucking shit, why take up screen space with this junk?

Good point. I recently played FFXVI and I mostly slept through the side quest dialogues about half way through the game because I knew that I didn't need to listen to them in order to finish the quest. It was always "go to this place that the map will clearly point out to you > pick up these items > kill these bands of enemies > watch poorly animated, MMO-style cutscene"

an example from this washed out piece of shit Hogwarts Legacy
it's like if Asteroids had a constant 'shoot the asteroids' reminder

to be fair, harry potter is targeted to literal children. you have to keep an eye on kids because they constantly try to injure or kill themselves

Actually I just got stuck for an hour in a tiny room with Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2 trying everything you could possibly imagine

I even asked ChatGPT "don't spoil it, but is this a timer boss fight where you just have to survive?" and it said no

You actually DID just have to survive for 5 minutes, the boss is invincible and there's nothing you can do.

The "objective: survive for 5 minutes" would have helped

I wonder how modern gamers would get through the original Outbreak games, especially on the higher difficulties. Some of those scenarios were quite difficult on Hard and Very Hard.

that's bad game design, the game could've communicated to you that you need to survive without spelling it out
if a game needs to tell you in plain English what you should be doing it's a failure of game design, since the devs should be effectively guiding you and getting you to figure things out yourself, an invisible hand to nudge you on the right path

Spend 1 hour watching popular youtubers play horror games. They go absolutely insane if there isn't text on the screen telling them exactly what to do every step of the way. Like actually melting down into a rage when tasked with figuring it out on their own.

Decisions like these were made because of playtesters

If the playtesters are retarded and can't figure something out, they report it as a frustration or flaw and it's on the devs to "fix" it (as demanded by the publisher).

I was watching my wife play this and noticed all the annoying UI on the screen.

This. If the game needs you to do X, then the that should be communicated. It can be either in a cutscene, one of the journal notes you collect, etc.
