The biggest problem with this game is the balance, everyone kills the secret super boss without actually having to learn any of his attack patterns by just one shoting him or close to it. And he is the highest HP enemy in the game so everything else melts even more.

The only thing I think is weird about the balancing is how comically weak the main bosses are compared to the random optional bosses just ten feet off the beaten path.

I don't mind keeping the hardest bosses in the game optional, but it's funny that just doing a portion of the side-stuff made it feel like I melted the main bosses so quickly that I didn't get to hear the best music in the game.

I've stopped playing and moved on to other things I wasn't too far into the game but the game has conflicting systems that are incompatible.
I was killing everything way too fast to even have to learn their attack timings. 90% of the time I was just skipping turns So I could actually see what the enemies do.
and doing battle to learn enemy timings = more exp. which means by trying to play the game you become even more overpowered which makes it harder to actually play the content of the game as you just 1 shot everything.

Putting Chromatic enemies in levels where you stand no chance of beating them unless you make every single parry for a 1 hour fight is retarded. And if you say to yourself that you'll come back later then you'll just steamroll them (if you even remember where they were). Also during Act 3 you should basically go to the popsicle stick tower and then beat the game because if you grind anything else then you'll be overpowered during sections that are supposed to have emotional weight.

I found the paintress and real renoir (I went straight to the final of act 3 so I didn't one shot him) fight the hardest in the entire game, their attack patterns are absolutely diabolical with long windups and fake out twirly movements into un-reactable attacks.

Its great, best new game Ive played since Sekiro, and before that I dont know.

I think the story of family loss and whatever is fine, but it comes out of nowhere. Last 5% of the game is like "all the story, world, and characters youve come to know and get invested in are fake and meaningless btw, heres a new story were going to cram in the last 5 minutes of the game, explain it even less (magical art, writers vs painters war?), and btw verso is going to suddenly turncoat with no buildup.

Yeah the balance is weird. Its too easy to one shot things later on, but they also one shot you and counterattack is overpowered. The patch letting you control sponge health and dmg is not a fix; its not my job to balance the game its yours.

Story is front and backloaded while nothing happens in the middle. I feel the setup for the expeditions is a great premise but they really squander it.

Enemies and bossies are too generic and samey. Species are kind of bland, especially the grandis or whatever. Gestrals are fine, they could even lean a bit more into them being kooky.

Not enough character development either. I dont care about them by the end anyway because of the twist though. Better than quippy whedon writing that plagues every game though.

So yeah issues aplenty, but still btfo most of the modern game industry

I wouldn't say the family thing comes out of nowhere, there was plenty of foreshadowing. What I think fails is connecting our previous survival and mystery narrative to the family drama, all the characters bar Alicia and Verso get sidelined hard and stop having agency or interesting inputs in everything that is happening.

I agree the gameplay needs quite a bit of tuning, I also felt it starts to drag a lot in the endgame, everything becomes a damage sponge if you don't use broken solo builds or specific overpowered set ups.

I havent looked up any specific builds, but with limited colour of lumina i naturally started building around Maelle, giving her huge strength and every buff, while sciel just inventions to her and lune heals them both (more agility and defense to them).
All of a sudden I get Stendhal and go from 9999 cap to dropping 3 million nukes on people.

Ive heard of people hitting billions but you dont even need to look up builds to get high enough

The turnbased RPG combat has no attempt at balance or purposeful design behind it at all. They slapped a very low damage cap on the early game as a bandaid and called it a day. You have infinite little things to tinker with except all that really matters in the end is figuring out which attacks have grossly overpowered motion values and then PARRYING
Because it's ultimately Parryslop and pressing one button with a timing that you memorise through trial and error auto-wins every encounter making everything else you do irrelevant. They can't even make animations which line up with the attack timing so they rely on sound cues detached from anything in the game world like a QTE or simply don't bother to telegraph anything because they can leave the player to grind it out through rote memorisation. It is the cheapest copout imaginable and deserves no credit whatsoever

It released at the same time as the Oblivion Remaster. Which was dev'd and shill'd for by chinks.
They felt threatened by the unplanned release of another decent game in the same window of time. So they ran a stupidly aggressive campaign against it [CO E33].
It backlashed, big time, because such aggressivity was obviously unwarranted. Hence why Expedition 33 ended up being hailed as the savior, at the time of its release.

This was my takeaway from playing as well. The story was also written by someone high as a kite and it made me appreciate FF’s stories in comparison. Octopath Traveler mechanically did a lot more for as a JRPG than whatever 33 was meant to be.
