Wrong. ME2 is the best in the series. ME1 is still pretty good, but it's an incredibly short game that sets up an enemy that can't be addressed properly in a game. It should have had Sovereign as a sole threat.
ME2 was a better game overall with a better storyline that, admittedly, should have cast the reapers completely aside and focused on only the collectors. Then 3 could have been about whatever.

Canon reason is that asari have some sort of mental power over other species that makes them appear more attractive. It's as bullshit as it sounds, but someone at Bioware REALLY liked Liara and wanted to push her romance way too hard.
