Should I try Castlevania 64?
Everyone is coming around and saying its a secret masterpiece after getting shit on so hard by millenialsoys back then. Should i try? I of course love this franchise and never got to this

I'd say it faithfully translates the bullshit difficulty of the 2D games into 3D.

Play Legacy of Darkness.

It fixes some of the jank with Castlevania 64 and adds more story content.

Maximum plebeian opinion. CV64+LoD should be experienced as one single game. They both have their own strong and weak points.

I loved Castlevania 64 back in the late 2000s when I first played it. Had a lot of magic for me at that age.

Never completed any of the 2D Castlevania, it's basically two different types of games, that's why Castlevania 64 was hated.

It literally doesn't because the level layouts have significant changes. My favorite level in CV64, Duel Tower, was completely butchered in LoD with all the fun (and bullshit) platforming challenges taken out, and that one Carrie level with the crystals was also made worse too. The Clock Tower in LoD is also pretty shit because of the platform waiting times.

Yeah, it's fucking cool. I recommend using this patch:
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7950/
and assigning the d-pad to right thumbstick for camera control. Also play the original, not Legacy of Darkness. LoD is gimped and Cornell's campaign is half assed imo.

i hate that game but i beat most bosses spamming crucifix so use that

when you get to the human boss, it seems hard but you can cheese it easily and the final boss you can save after beating phase 1. The final fight though when you get him to his final phase is the most cancerous garbage ive ever played in a castlevania game and i wouldnt blame you if you quit right there as its just unfun and tedious

It's the AVGN effect.
>CDi FPGA core comes out
>Finally get around to playing Zelda CDi after decades of everyone saying it's the worst thing to happen to gaming
>It's not even the worst game I've played this year
>The soundtrack is solid
>The art design is pretty neat
>The cutscenes are cheesy and fun
>The only issue is that some of the platforming is awkward and the CDi could have really used a third button
>Even higher difficulty areas are fine as you're given three lives per action stage and the only thing that happens at game over is being sent back to the map
>Actually enjoy the game
>Rewatch AVGN
>He's not engaging with any of the mechanics properly
>Complains about enemies at the end of the game when you're straight up given an item to freeze them
>Start to wonder how many decent games I'm let ecelebs spoil my and other's view on

I agree but it's kind of forgivable since the lore is pretty solid outside of Lament. I prefer it over the reboot origin story anyway.

I don't know about that example specifically, but this has happened with every single content creator I've tried watching. Maybe not at first, but eventually they'll release a video that makes you question everything they've done. Now I only watch some that aren't as definitive with their criticisms or praises and just kind of ramble about the game, anything with a review score is basically worthless imo.

literally 2 of the 3 final phases of that game are easy and phase 1 you can literally just save after it to skip is permanently. Its really phase 3 thats shit because its just so fucking annoying and takes years to beat as the boss just keeps fucking appearing with annoying shit and teleporting away barely giving you enough time to hit

First off, it's a shader, not a filter. It's a complex program that runs on your GPU and emulates CRTs. If you view it scaled you may see rainbow effects or other problems.

If you're too retarded to not view an image downscaled, don't respond to me.

Like 90% of the game is the same

There's 2 sections that are different for each character, and very slight story differences but it doesn't really matter

Also different attacks, Carrie shoots ranged orbs which are kind of strong/easier.

Yes I have, here I blew it up for you so you can see what 240p content is supposed to look like on your mobile telephone.

Unless you're talking about the general blurriness and stretched textures, of which yes that looks like shit because it's accurate

I'm looking at it on a 32" 1440p monitor which, given the source resolution, is the whole fucking problem. I don't know what your setup is so I hope you either have a tiny monitor or you sit really far away from the monitor you game on because this just looks like eye rape.

Here's the image with no shader, you're either viewing the image scaled or complaining about accurate N64 graphics.
Anonymous No.718905902
>>718905653

all I'm saying is that if you're on a 2K or 4K monitor at 27" or above, the way you have that CRT filter set for that resolution, you would need to be like 10 feet away from the monitor to have it look normal

the CRT pixels are just too fucking big for that resolution, too noticeable and you don't get the blurring / smoothing effect at anything less than like, 7 feet away

Anonymous No.718908175

you're playing at too high of a resolution, to get a more crisp image you should play it in at most 720p(1280x1024 being the biggest resolution for a 21inch crt in the years following the release of the game)

>Bloodlines lore doc's last entry in the timeline was a space for a story set in World War II
>Castlevania 64 was apparently set during WWII at one point in development (probably explaining the skeletons on motorcycles)
I wonder if there's a scenario where Castlevania 64 ended up as a psuedo-1999, with Reinhardt having the final battle with Dracula.

I beat both it and LoD recently. A lot of the bad things people say can be true, but somehow it still managed to come one of my favorites. My biggest unhinged recommendation is to do Reinhardt and Carrie's routes in 64 whike simultaneously playing LoD as Cornel. Trust me when I say you'll get get a better appreciation for the level designs between both games if you play their levels back to back.
Anonymous No.718909590

I feel like LoD Duel Tower had more interesting set pieces, and was less frustrating. But while it initially felt more enjoyable, it also was more generic. The level's layout in LoD played mostly like any other LoD level. And it lacked both the strong visual aesthetic and core gameplay identity of the 64 version. The 64 Duel Tower was a gauntlet. It had no save points, all of the fights were cage matches, and the platforming was painful. But it also felt rewarding, like you literally just climbed an entire tower. And yiu did, infact its strange how all the towers in LoD felt more like Labrynths instead.

But I digress. My favorite level is still Tower of Science from 64.
