There's nothing wrong with being able to freely control a camera in games IMO. Fixed viewpoints are basically nonexistent these days. I also don't expect modern devs, or "devs" in some instances, to be able to make a competent fixed camera/"automatic" camera system (for lack of a better description) these days either.
For all intents and purposes KB+M is usually better in most games that have camera controls since you have to constantly swap between the stick and face buttons with most controllers, and for the fine control reasons you already stated. The simple fact is that if you want to develop a 3D game with things you want people to see in landscapes, buildings, characters, etc., you just have to give the players the freedom to move anywhere in the world's boundaries and look anywhere, too.
In that regard, fixed/"automatic" camera systems just don't really work that well if you want players to look at various angles, which in the modern era most do. The push for ever more detailed graphics only enforces this mindset. Most devs want players marveling at the visuals and taking screenshots from any which way they please/can.
I also agree with the nostalgia faggotry, and its accompanying consooming. Has been one of the worst things for this medium. It's why we've suffered the constant raping in remakes over the years, and also the snail's pace development of certain peripherals, like these, or other hardware. And it's never nostalgia in the sense of wanting to keep the same vibe the older stuff had, instead it's always "I enjoyed this thing from this brand/series when I was younger, so I'm obligated to buy every new thing they crap out forevermore, no matter how dissimilar it is, like the good drone I am :)"
