Artillery
What RTS (or RTT) has the most satisfying artillery?

Warhammer Total War with the dwarfs, seeing a cannon shoot down a dragon, a Fire Cannon burn down a whole legion in a single shot or cavalry get shot down during their charge in one or two Organ gun volley is incredibly satisfying. Chaos Dwarfs are pretty satisfying too with their mortars acting like mini nukes.

mortar, howitzer, towed, selfpropelled, or rocket? i think Eugen games do pretty good in how devastating artillery is such as steel division normandy 44, sd2, and WARNO.
warhammer 40k: dawn of war imperial guard basilisks are also very satisfying.

Total Empire/Napoleon really drills into your brain the meaning of fire superiority. Entire lines of troops getting obliterated by cannon fire from a bad maneuver is a highlight.

Part of this is the way Rome 2 and on changed how unit damage works. They did away with dynamic collision and basically made each formate a tactical blob with health. It’s really atrocious what happened.

Arrows used to find marks in shogun 2. Now they just tick away health and a predetermined number of guys fall off.

GT games are pretty good with simulating arty accurately, with the limitations imposed by vidyagayms. you need spotters, connections (telephone line, radio sets, voice), plenty of correction and so on.

Anon you're only like half right. There still are dynamic collisions and each man in the unit is its own thing, they're just retarded and fucked the formation AI and various values so units don't function right. Additionally, individual man within the unit have health, even if it depicts the overall unit as having a health bar.
This is gay and is worse, but for example a cannonball in TW:WH will crash through lines. It's just deliberately made ineffective in various ways. Arrows will knock health off individual models and there's some circumstances that can lead to a unit where every model has lower health but isn't dead, or where there's only a few units at high health.
tl;dr it's literally just CA's incompetence, it's not even anything systemic with the games

World in Conflict. Artillery and bomber can level whole blocks of units, they are really powerfull. The only problem is that these are mostly power buttons you press and direct the ground to bomb. But if you want satisfying destruction there are few games that deliver like WIC.

More traumatizing than satisfying, but whenever I read about Stalinorgel I remember bf1942. Despite explossions having no umph in that game it really captured the helplessness and chaos of seeing everything around you blowing up, and knowing that you'll probably survive but maybe you won't, and there's not much you can do about it so you just lay down and wait to die.

Ground Control artillery hit like a fucking hammer. There's a reason that aside from the Command APC and Drone Deployer, they're the only unit in the entire game where you get only a single one instead of a squad.

The sequel had much better visuals for it, but the actual damage was nerfed into the dirt.

The main point of Warhammer is variety, in the other historical games you have little target or artillery variety. Seeing your Rocket troops kill a guy with a gun gets old after a while if I have to take Empire for example, having a chain axe throwing artillery piece turn a legion into mincemeat isn't something you can get somewhere else.
