I haven't dropped them entirely. There is a couple Co-Op games I still play. But I don't play anything even remotely competitive anymore.

WoW basically ruined me in that regard.
I used to be one of the best tanks on my server in one of the best guilds. And I just hated how serious everyone took it. And it only got worse after people started using third party websites and third party programs to monitor progress and create ranked tables. How toxic people became over these things and the way they started to treat others was disgusting. I hated it. I had more fun leveling alts and playing with randoms than my guild. So I quit my guild, but in the next expansion that bizarre elitist thinking started infecting even random groups. I'd get because of my previous scores on these websites, but then others would get kicked or bullied and I got sick of people treating the game like a job.

That is exactly why i'm not playing multiplayer games. I don't want to have anyone telling me how to play. Vidya is my "me time" that means if i want i want to stand around and look at a fucking chair for 10 minutes i will do just that or if i want to mess around in menus instead of rushing from A to B i will also just do that. And especially i don't want to hold up the action for anyone else same as i don't want anyone doing stuff that pisses me off.

That is one side of the coin. The other is the fact that i'm in EU. That means i get matched with everyone from east coast NA all the way to east russia and from fucking finland down to morocco. Which means that the chances of anyone speaking english is very slim. People either don't have mics at all, or if they do they speak their own language, if they don't just forget to enable push to talk and have the TV or somebody else talking in the background.

back in my teenage years when I was addicted to call of duty, tekken or wow pvp, I treated those games like an actual job. reading guides, practicing all the time, because if you didn’t keep up you’d just get stomped and insulted. eventually I started going back to single player games I had skipped during those years of only online gaming and had a great time. that left me with no time to keep up in competitive games, so I gradually stopped playing them. these days I only bother with online when it’s coop with friends

I didn't, multiplayer games just switched to EOMM slop across the board so there's no longer anything of any value in modern MP titles.

When I was putting hundreds of hours into a single game but not having fun past a certain point. I think I get the most enjoyment out of a multiplayer game early on when I'm still discovering it, seeing what all the weapons/characters/etc can do. Once you're familiar enough with the game, it changes from discovering it to studying it, and then familiarity breeds contempt, "I hate fighting this character," "the netcode is terrible," "nobody knows how to coordinate." The carrot on the stick is the little improvements you make, but you may not be able to improve in a way that makes the game's flaws manageable for you.

Around the time of Halo 5, Infinite Warfare, Gears 4, and Siege, so around 2016, when each of my favorite multiplayer franchises were obliterated. Inb4 "all of those franchises were always trash"... If you didn't bro down and experience peak xbox live circa 2007 to 2012, when you and your friends were in high school, then you have lived a depress and unfun existence.

I mostly now just work on my modified extreme D2R solo self-found grail, while casually playing games from the 6th generation and earlier. Just beat System Shock 2 and it's now probably in my top 20. I hear POE2 sucks, but I'm still gonna try it on full release.

When battle pass model became a thing. I don't have time to be GRINDING multiplayer games. I used to just jump onto a community server with my friends whenever, and have fun. This maximum "engagement" model has suck all fun from multiplayer games.
