If you've "enjoyed" a game from this time period, it was probably your brain being tricked by psychological skinner box practices. Games like Tetris, Joust, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt, and Dig Dug are all pure in that they are pure True Fun, whereas something like Ocarina of Time or Half Life relies on False Fun, Forced Fun, Nu-Fun, and either Pseudo or Mid-Fun.

Some of the overworld graphics are actually a bit different, not really improvements, just different. Interestingly FRLG had an all new tileset and sprites, the RS player sprites are even redrawn with the new more correct perspective. And then in Emerald the FRLG players are redrawn with the shitty incorrect perspective.

Minish Cap has one of the strongest first impressions of any game ever.
Shame it just gets progressively worse / more annoying. Structurally, it hasn't aged very well.
Still infinitely more charming than any game made today though
