You know, it kind of makes me wonder if Beatrix and Steiner shouldn't have been reversed in the game. Steiner is this obedient general for Queen Brahne, but a good person. She lies to him to justify her wars, such as telling him the Burmecians and Lindblum are plotting a sneak attack. He'd never know about her intentions to unleash Eidelions to wipe out Clayra or sack Lindblum, and he'd be horrified to see it. Prior to Clayra being nuked he'd be hopping up and down and ranting about their imminent sneak attack which Alexandria has to defend against and nobody would know WTF he is talking about. His turn against Brahne would begin here, and even when we fought him boss battles we'd see that he shows respect to worthy foes and isn't arrogant.
Beatrix should be the Princess bodyguard. She's haughty and even slightly prissy, thinks she's too good for these thieves. However she's forced to rough it in the wilds, admit that Zidane is noble in his own right and responsible for saving Garnet's life, and meanwhile Beatrix and the party are getting attacked by Black Mages sent to retrieve the princess, which would wound Beatrix' pride.
