I think we should give Sonic Team a chance. Yeah Sonic Frontiers was dogshit and the feedback response basically confirmed that they suck at game design, but that doesn't mean they can't fix everything in the next mainline Sonic game if we support them with our wallets.

Empty grassy fields with nothing to do worked for zelda open world. Why didn't it work for sonic?

BotW at least had points of interest, places you'd see in the distance and be drawn towards. And along the way you might find the terrain difficult to traverse, or the weather tough to handle without making preparations beforehand. In Frontiers there's nothing of interest anywhere and even if there was there's nothing difficult about traversal anyways, unless you consider wrangling Sonic's jank movement the real challenge.

The next game will probably be another flavor of Generations again because people loved Shadow Generations and "GOTTA BOOST FAST" gameplay.
