Why did the Breath of Fire series never really take off? It had all the JRPG anime appeal of Final Fantasy but plus dragons.

It didn't need to take off. It's good that Dragon Filter blew out all the complacent jarpiggy retards by asking them to engage with the game and its mechanics properly instead of grinding/facerolling.
