Normally I would encourage playing the story normally, but there are some cutscenes that lack voice acting due to scheduling issues and atleast one cutscene missing completely early on.
With the proposed September release close, you should either hold off or stick with the arcade modes to get a feel for the game.

that amount of content you described is going to be daunting for fps standards too
one thing that comes to mind which could compare is Serious Sam 2, it had extremely varied levels but you do get burnt out by the end
