I hate when games visualize the game world but not you, the character.
I can't get into Earthbound for this exact reason. Something about this perspective and how it's presented just feels cheap and clunky to me and it makes me not want to play the game

I felt the same with dragon quest 1 2 and 3 but eventually the style grew on me. Back then we had what ff3 where the sprite takes a step forward and does a little thing? Unless you count that one Sega game.

This used to be me but I got used to it in SMT IV.

But the psychological effect is no joke even if it goes away, it's the reason id also added some kind of face to the HUD with their early first person games Catacombs, Wolfenstein3D and Quake.

i'm inclined to agree with you BUT i do think first person rpgs would be cool if they had more robust animations that actually have the weapon, your character's hand, etc. like, first person animations.

just flashing some FX sprites and evaluating damage is really whack.

What a bizarre and autistic thing to obsess over. You may need medication, buddy

It's not an unusual opinion, and where do you see anything about anon obsessing over it? He just says he doesn't want to play Earthbound.

I quite frankly can't care. I could spin some drivel about it being more impressive but it would be something in don't truly believe.
While I can acknowledge the benefits of both paths when it comes to showing characters in battle or not they fail to matter to me.

Fucking Dungeon Master. I love the smooth controls and fps of the pc version but love the music and visuals of the SNES port. Has anyone ever merged the two?

do you carry a mirror around in real life so you can always see yourself from head to toe? no, because that'd be stupid. When walking down the street you basically see nothing of yourself, this is why first person games are more immersive.

I've never seen someone modernize a genre as perfectly as the Grimrock games. They captured the soul of the old games I played in the 90s but brought them up to date. I am blessed to have played them

I'm making a dungeon crawler and have an automap, but I consider removing it sometimes. Or at least making it a spell or item that you can't always use. My friends testing it always want the automap though, so hard to decide. Seems like most people demand it.

Maybe it should be an option at the start or something. No automap also lets you play around with teleporters and spinning traps and stuff more, which the automap trivializes.

Why not make it something you can turn on or off but at a cost? Like whenever it's on you only get a 2/3 of the exp or money you would usually get.

Conflux 3 is one of the best Dungeon Crawlers out there. You guys should try it out!

If you don't want to have a spell for it, maybe a way to make the map update at save points or have the map spell reveal at a high cost.

i'm the opposite. i fucking loved not even being able to see my own gun in the original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games. cranks up my immersion 1000%.
but i can see why you'd say that.

Boomers can't play dungeon crawlers at all though
They stick to D&D shovelware and glorified VNs

I don’t think having it as a toggle is a bad option, but I always liked the idea of a paper map being a consumable that reveals portions of the world map when used or collected

if you don't have the option to make a map ingame then you shouldn't release your game at all

I used to feel exactly like you. Now it's my prefered style. Simply because I know that I will, with a 100% certainty, not have to look at exaggerated anime sword swinging with flips, 10+ seconds of magic animations or my "favorite": the backflip that makes the archer shoot harder

What level of irony are you on where you pretend that worst and most tedious dungeon crawlers ever are fun?
Anonymous No.718937987
>>718935834
I prefer dungeon crawlers that do not automap, because I love to draw the map on my own. Sort of the same reason I loved La-Mulana when I generally don't like Metroidvanias: I had to keep writing down spoken clues, visual clues, things-that-could-be-clues etc. I wish more games were like that

Maybe add a cheat code for it.
