You don't hate troonslators nearly enough

>OG FF Tactics is widely regarded as a masterpiece
>the translation has a couple minor issues but is overall regarded as very solid
>remake the game
>rather than just clean up spelling/grammar errors and minor clarity/mistranslation issues, they completely rewrote the entire script
>new script takes massive creative liberties and largely ignores the original Japanese
>has some pretentious, flowery, faux-Shakespeare garbage for every single character, even bandits and peasants, that sounds like it was written by high-school drama students
>also completely butcher the sound effects and music
>also completely butcher the pixel art
>also have massive slowdown for spells that makes them run at like half speed
>also totally removes the spell chants
>but if you ask anywhere online, reddit, resetera, etc. they will universally tell you WotL is somehow the definitive and to ignore the original
What the actual fuck? Is this some kind of psy-op or are people just this willfully ignorant?

Both of the translations are fucked in their own ways. Some of the lines in the original PSX translation make no goddamn sense and completely butcher entire scenes. The PSP version has unskippable cutscenes that are objectively inferior to the original in-game cutscenes in every way + the enshittification of the script.

The PSP version is better as it fits the world building tone they have. No, we don't know what the peasant class spoke day to day in medieval times. The parlance of those days are lost and only the nobility could read/write, so those fancy expressions would used more by the upper class. Still it is just a video game. I get totally get criticism of localization groups going too far (8-4 LTD in Japan did Unicorn Overlord a disservice by embellishing the English script with insufferable amount of purple prose).

In Tactics case, having played both the PSP and original PS1 release, there are things I like about each one. Tough blame yourself or God (https://x.com/HG_101/status/1362797613418962944) is better in the PS1 release, than whatever the PSP did (something along the lines "it was not my hand that led to this, but your noble birth that betrayed you"). The PS1 had flavor text that went off before your spells were cast, which was a good thing. The modern day "remaster" is just an upscaler + new translation with voice acting for 60 dollars. I would be willing to give them a break if it was 30 dollars, but that's outrageous and I already know they changed the infamous "blame yourself or God" line so not looking too hot for a definitive translation that keeps the best of both PSP and PS1's localization.

The new celshaded CGI cutscenes in the PSP War of the Lions version were breathtaking and the script flowed well with those new scenes. All absent from the $60 low effort remaster btw, it's the PS1 build with almost nothing from the PSP version.
