Reminder its gameplay was always considered good. The biggest criticism of it back in the day was that it didn't have more movieshit where Mario talked.

It needed less bullshit and more platforming. The dream realm obstacle courses or whatever were the best part of the game and there weren't enough of them. if you made a game with just those, and without the stupid water gun on your back it'd be a lot better.

Pretty sure the main complaints were lack of polish, blue coins, insane difficulty spikes, and sameness of environments throughout the game

I also played it and effectively finished it 100%, save for one stray blue coin that disappeared. It was fun to play outside of 100%'ing it, though not as fun as Mario 64 due to the inherently-slower gameplay from the removal of the long jump for the sake of fludd.

Its crazy how revisionism keeps warping the modern view of this game.

This game was considered bad during its time because Fludd was fucking dog shit and nobody wanted him. The levels where shadow mario steals him from you and you actually do some platforming were always considered the high points of the game.

The levels were pretty crap. I dont remember them except for the early one with the piranha plant boss.

I dont think the game made the most of the fludd mechanics either
