The devs couldn't put in a whole new ending, so instead chose to put in some dialogue. Dialogue which is in character. Bethesda didn't even half to do that. If there weren't any lines about it, no one would have complained.

Frankly CRPGs were all shit until after the genre got revived in the 2010s.
Fallout 1 and 2 control like ass, are not nearly as 'in depth' as you think they are, are way over difficult, have shit combat and progression, and really nothing going for them outside of their world building and music.

You level too quickly in 3, so you have to actively complete certain quests early if you don't want to lose a bunch of npcs overlord spam. It ruins the experience.

In general the ending of Fallout 3 is pretty contrived and dumb.
The mainquestline of Fallout 3 is mostly good, but it shits the narrative bed so hard right at the beginning of the second act with the Enclave's reveal, and the ending that the whole thing leaves a sour taste.

I think it was commendable that the writer's thought to include dialogue from the companions about the ending, but in practice all it did was shine a light on how shit the logic of the ending was.

exactly, and this exact way of thinking about player progress is endemic to every single thing bethsoft has done since morrowind.

when you find yourself writing stuff like this, to prevent the character immune to the only remaining threat, from dealing with that threat - that should be a redflag that you've contrived the entire thing.

but bethsoft writers are dull to that instinct because of essential NPCs. they invented that system so that they would never again have to think meaningfully about player freedom.

There's no defending it. Fallout 3 was never good and never will be. No amount of jeet shilling when the remaster drops will ever change that fact.

i played fo3 on release and again 4 years later and in all those years since then decided it's a game I'd never need to play again, NV is way better for an occasional replay.
did a new fo3 playthrough again this year and all it did was make me realize all the writing tropes they're never going to try again because they're not "safe" enough for this pussy faggot tranny world, and also if you ignore all the side shit and b line through the main story, it's a 20 hour game

there's a society full of children and two of them were acted out to be hardasses

there's plenty more examples and anyone who's played the game recently should get what i mean. it's all fitting for a fallout universe and I can't imagine ever enjoying a fallout story any more subdued than this. a lot of actors in the game are more kind and accepting in a mercilessly unforgiving dead wasteland than they really should be.
