I absolutely despise self-insert characters because it results in a mute retard. Games are fictonal and I can insert into any of the characters' by forcing me to insert into the MC you remove my ... agency in inserting (uhh). I think the only time I have liked a self-insert was in Chrono Trigger because I can kill that retard.
