Simcity 3000 is about the closet when you consider that fusion energy is a viable method to keep your cities going. Also Magnasanti being the most detailed depictions of a proto hivecity/cyberpunk hellscape. Right down to the tumbling statistics and quality of life for the poor faggots forced to live through it for 50k years uninterrupted. Don't let the cheerful color scheme fool you there is a a lot of dark shit running beneath it.

At a technical level; Cities Skylines is the closest thing you'll get to a true successor to Sim City 4. However, it lacks all of the quirky charm of Will Wright's Maxis. I always felt SC4 was the last true Maxis game before everything after felt like they were EA games first.

How do i play sc4 good?
I can play it like a game, get profit, move onto the next sector. But i cant work transport (the guy saying THIS intersection sucks). And none of my cities look pretty.
Or do i just repeat the same formula every single time for like 8 sectors till i have 1 giant sprawl on the world map? Thats no fun.

Skylines coming out and everyone going nuts with traffic engineering with the flexible road system was a fun time. Shame that the actual traffic simulation was dogshit with cars all piling up in one lane and forcing the player to design around it. That one thing is actually what made me quit the game before really experiencing much of it because I realized the need to preplan road design (for later even if it wasn't necessary early on) in such a weird way (I think I had meant to build a one-way network with splitting to force traffic to use all lanes) and it was a goddamn fun vacuum.

In general that may be the case, but r/piratedgames is a pretty reliable source for websites to download shit from for free. The only time I risked getting malware from one of the safe uploaders was when I downloaded something from Dodi Repacks (deleted it before executing the file though), but last I checked the mods added a warning next to the link telling you to use reliable Adblockers (which I did, but somehow you are STILL redirected to infested files). Also, I generally see more people here hating on piracy than on any other social media platform that isn't specifically targeted towards artists and other content creators who care about intellectual property.

Most people think that commieblocks were an intentional design choice by the soviets, and not a generally laughed-at idea that they were forced to adopt because they were trying to provide new housing (because the russian empire didn't build any) for millions of people with no money. When the alternative was 10+ people to a room (the way it was before the USSR), yeah, they built some ugly prefab buildings.
There's a big autistic series about soviet architecture my communist friend made me watch so I feel unnaturally angry whenever people say "commieblocks" or whatever because I earned the right after listening to a finnish guy ramble about communism for ten hours.

It's hard to tell without going into specifics but the usual culprits of failing early is building too many production buildings too fast and getting fucked by maintenance costs and/or your paying population is tiny in comparison to your industry. So the basic advice I can give you is:
>build more houses
>don't skip on making luxury goods, in particular beer for workers and rum for artisans are extremely good money makers early on
>jack up working conditions to get more production out of fewer buildings (happiness is a non-factor assuming you're satisfying luxury needs)
>make excess soap and sell it to the prison guy if you're strapped to cash
>don't play with non-easy AIs, it's not worth the hassle if you're struggling

Learn to forget about the timer. Don't ignore it but just focus on doing your objectives, getting resolve up (ideally to the blue) and open up the map. Assess caches and if they contain shit you don't need then save 'em for a (pardon the pun) rainy day. A good mindset to adopt is setting up a supply chain to a non-wood fuel source ASAP and unassigning all your woodcutters when the storm hits. Don't worry much about losing colonists, it sucks but it happens and you've got time between storms to try and rectify that.
Even my rougher runs, once I'm past the rocky start tend to end really comfy. Though I won't deny that lizards and foxes can fuck off and die. Harpies get a pass for their hearth assignment bonus being crazy good.

God, the always online shit though, especially after pirates clowned on 'em and shown it was bullshit was, well, bullshit. I remember having to refund Just Cause 3 because my connection was rough at the time and the offline mode for that game was a fucking joke.

Have you tried looking at your production graphs to see how much you're producing per minute and the average round trip time for a single ship?
Hint: In the early game it is extremely unlikely that you'll require more than a single schooner to ship up to two types of goods from one island to another. Throughput is much more important than carry capacity, it's very unlikely that your secondary island will have produced more than a single ship can carry by the time it makes a roudn trip.

There's too many Tropico games at this point.
I cannot tell you the difference between any of the newer ones they've done.
It's all basically the same very similar formula, and they never really do anything interesting with it.
It always feels too silly to have any serious thought behind it, and the economy is often very basic to really enjoy.

The biggest nuclear disaster in history, involving a retarded design being run in a retarded way, killed 4,000 people in the long run. It would have killed more people if it was a coal power station in its day-to-day operations.

Disingenuous faggot. Fukushima killed 1 person and caused several permanent injuries, and it was completely avoidable, as shown by Onagawa. After an expensive cleanup, most of Fukushima's inhabitants have moved back.

Yes they do. France has much cheaper bills than Germany. LCOE is only part of the final bill, and it is inflated by private interest costs.

your refusal to admit to the POTENTIAL catastrophic scale of nuclear disasters is why i dismiss out of hand everything you say. you are lying - to me, but also to yourself. nuclear accidents can go very bad, much much worse than any other form of power generation, and your safety assurances are worthless because you clearly don't take the risk seriously when you refuse to even admit it exists.

the scale of a disaster is not a simple calculation of lives lost, and that's assuming that you can even calculate those numbers correctly. a coal power plant accident isn't going to render vast swathes of land permanently uninhabitable, for example. you people have such limited thinking.
nuclear power is a never-gonna-happen white elephant pushed by fossil fuel companies to delay the transition to wind, solar, and other renewables. nuclear power is neither cheap nor safe and it's also not real. we have perfectly functional and viable alternatives to fossil fuels already, and so all your panic about "we need NUCLEAR to save us from..." is meaningless. we need something, yes, and there are many options, and nuclear isn't a good one.
support for nuclear power is just reflexive hostility to renewables because somehow electrical generation infrastructure became woke-coded. when the economics stack up and you can provide an actual credible safety plan that doesn't just revolve around ignoring the risks then sure, nuclear can be in the running, but until then stick to posting your comics.

that's a great analogy, because it captures your naivete perfectly. you're exactly the kind of person who would hand over unlimited tyrannical power to the government out of blind faith that nothing could ever go wrong because surely the experts have it all figured out and there's no such thing as perverse incentives. your refusal to even consider the worst case scenario as a real possibility highlights the fundamental unseriousness of your positions.

the USSR had safer reactor designs available and CHOSE to build RBMKs anyway.
the existence of more modern, safe designs does absolutely fucking nothing to guarantee that people will always use them and always use them properly. it is wholly naive to pretend that you've solved a problem which is fundamentally cost-cutting and hubris by developing a more complex and expensive design. that's not the problem. that was never the problem. the RBMK reactor was not the problem, the problem was the human factor decisions to even use that design in the first place.
again, this is why i keep saying pro-nuclear advocacy is fundamentally unserious. nuclear safety is not a technical problem and cannot be solved with technical means. pro-nuclear people with their blind faith in design solutions are exactly the last people who can fix these issues. as the small modular army nuclear reactors of the 50s proved, you cannot make it so simple and so safe that people can't fuck it up.

quintessential naivete.
furthermore if your argument is that we need nuclear power to prevent global warming and save lives then that means that we would have to build them in russia, india, china, pakistan, indonesia, iran, all kinds of shitholes that are as bad as or worse than the USSR ever was. even fucking north korea, right? because we're trying to replace coal power? what happens to your perfect design solutions then?
either you have to say that nuclear reactors are so safe that even india and north korea should be encouraged to start building them en-masse, or you have to admit that nuclear reactors do have inherent risks but you believe that our """"highly evolved, responsible, technocratic""""" society has solved those risks in a permanent and incorruptible way so we can be uniquely trusted to do it 'properly' and therefore no concerns exist.
it's not that these positions are inarguable, it's that you're NOT ARGUING THEM. and that's why i say you are unserious. because i'm open to arguments that deal with the reality of nuclear power and its risks and trade offs, but all you have for me is incoherent denial and goalpost-shifting.

i think there was one in chernobyl but i'm not sure.
do you get the irony of what you're doing here? you're asking me where are the examples of nuclear accidents by reference to a nuclear fucking accident. you also completely failed to engage substantively with the question. out of one corner of your mouth you say that our highly developed western societies have tamed the dangerous nuclear beast with our strong safety and transparency culture, and out of the other corner of your mouth you say we should immediately start mass construction of nuclear reactors in fucking indonesia and papua new guinea. there is a contradiction here and your only answer for it is "modern reactor designs are perfectly safe."
that is an utterly unconvincing answer. firstly, we've heard it before. secondly, we already have an example of a nuclear accident being caused by a deliberate decision to build and operate a sub-par design for cost-cutting reasons.
it is an article of faith for you and all other i fucking love science midwit redditors that your technical solutions have permanently solved human factor problems. you are wrong. and that's why i don't trust you to operate a nuclear power plant.

If you remember the original SimCity there was the option to fully replace your city with light rail lines and that was over thirty years ago, it was only when more peoples' inputs allowed for a more balanced game (even if rail was massively buffed over anything resembling reality). Plus almost every developer who has had money thrown at them to make a "good game" has turned out to be a talentless douchebag. Remember when people thought that Ron Gilbert was the REAL brains behind Monkey Island?

My new city in A-Train 9. I hope that A-Train 10, if released, will have the more advanced technology of 9, the complex timetables of 9, and the more sophisticated city and passenger simulation (including tourists) of Tourism. It would be the perfect mix.
A-Train 9 is too braindead once you understand the formula. It's basically a timetable simulator with 1-minute accuracy for mega train autists.

Yes, unironically. Needlessly spreading out your cities and homes just because you have cars wastes a shit ton of space and disconnects people from their communities. the sad part is that America had the same design philosphy as the rest of Europe up until the 40'-60's where we decided that was gay and created football field sized parking lots and decided a family of one needs 4 bedroom homes for no reason complete with a huge lawn and pool. It's crazy

Blaming cars is a leftist thing to do. Tokyo is a city with a huge number of cars, but it works. It has measures in place to discourage car use, but cars exist, they are there, there is a huge road network for them, and yet you don't see deserts where there is nothing but parking lots for miles around.

I'm not saying get rid of cars anon. I agree with you but the problem is that America went too far into car dependency. Having many ways of getting somewhere whether that be walking, biking, metro or cars is good for the community. I feel like half the reason young people don't go out and socialize as much in these days is because getting anywhere is a such hassle. Having to sit in traffic and find parking can be a serious pain in the ass that it makes staying home easier.

More or less. Demand for trains depends on the buildings around the station. Schools, for example, generate demand when classes start and end. Commercial buildings that are closed on weekends do not generate demand Saturday and Sunday. Etc.
This already creates a certain complexity that is enough to make you create a complex timetable.
What the game does not simulate is the passengers' destination. They get on the train and all get off where you decide. In A-Train Tourism, there is also this destination simulation, but in return the timetables are less complex than in A-Train 9.

Japan is a poor example. They have limited usable land so their cities are compact and intelligently engineered solely because of that reason. If they had as much available land as NA you bet their ass theyβd take advantage of it. Just look at China and South Korea.

That's not true. There's a book called "The Making of Urban Japan" that chronicles the entire evolution of urbanism in Japan and how it differs from the West. They are not magicians capable of optimizing things better because they have little space. They made a lot of mistakes too, and many of the characteristics of their urbanism were accidental because they depended on a lot of things they did not have complete control over. And Tokyo was destroyed several times too, which allowed them to try some more aggressive things here and there.

It functions best with a small population, yes, but it was designed to sprawl out big enough to be comparable to other city builders with hand-placed buildings rather than zoning.
Frankly we need more smaller scale city builders that are focused on smaller details, on sculpting aesthetics as much as operations.

The big buildings that have heavier point swings for proximity bonuses, but there's also a feature that lets you add scoring modifiers for building placement (i.e. larger proximity ring, ignore duplication score penalty, etc)
