Ironically, Japanese brackets are actually decent. You'll regularly see unexpected characters make it to top 16 or even top 8. This issue is that Japan shits on NA and EU, and the only Japanese players who travel are the tier whores like Acola, Miya, Hurt, Doramigi, and Raru. So every single notable Western top 8 is polluted with Steve, G&W, Snake, Min-Min, and Luigi. And then you factor in all the frauds in NA who play these characters or other, equally cancer characters like Sonic and ROB. Ultimate is truly a terrible, terrible competitive game.

Why does ultimate always get the final slot over melee nowadays? You could argue ultimate is more popular especially in entrants but the fact remains it hasn't gotten more views than melee in nearly two years. It's not 2019 anymore. No one wants to play the Steve, Sonic, Snake, G&W, or Min-Min minigames - even at the top level, where top players will commonly counterpick to avoid extremely disadvantageous MUs where one character obviously can't play the game.
Look at the top and high tiers in 4, it was so much more grounded than Ultimate is now:

It's a messy story but the gist of it Mang0, a known alcoholic who can't control his intake, was invited by other Smash players and organizers to an event where the goal was to get as drunk as humanly possible. Mang0 drank so much he became at risk of getting alcohol poisoning while the guys around him kept cheering him on and handing him more beer, and he ended up air humping behind a girl's head multiple times. The community banned him for a year over it and Mang0 gave an apology and says he's going to seek help for his alcoholissm

It's absolutely partly Mang0's fault for entering the situation, but it's also the fault of the guys who enabled it and never cut him off at the event, but only Mang0 got punished while the other guys saw no reprecussions

As for the competitive scene I think it peaked around 2018. It was already on the decline before the lockdowns, but afterwards it was clear that the main attraction had turned into a sideshow that no one really took seriously. Plus a lot of the best players had quit.
It sounds like the 1v1 gamemode is still going strong but that's not as fun.
