Story's end, that is their nature.
FFXIV's great strength, the thing that let it challenge WoW was the story. As such, it was inevitable after Endwalker something like this was going to occur.

Honestly it is kinda crazy that XIV has gone on this long.
Back when ARR released WoW had been going for less than 10 years, now ARR is nearly 15 years old with no signs of proper new blood in the genre.
