While the exact details depends on how much you believe in narrator Chara, he's largely just a passive observer for much of neutral and true pacifist run. In genocide you essentially allow him to distance himself more and more from the harm you are making him inflict, until he eventually just stops caring about anything than the blind pursuit of more power.

I think, for the most part, telling Chara she was the messiah was probably a VERY bad idea despite the best intentions of the Dreemurr. He was certainly fucked up in the head, far more so than even Kris, when they arrived in the underground. But it's hard to judge they were beyond saving.
