Thinking on installing either SteamOS or another Linux system on my second boot.

Is SteamOS any better for playing vidya akin to SteamDeck while also doing emulation on retroarch?

Or should I try another Linux-based OS? And which one is good to play? (Mint, Debian, Bazzite, Ubuntu, Red Hat, etc)

everything else < Bazzite

Bazzite = SteamOS
If you're asking which one, Bazzite/SteamOS for sure, both at steam games AND emulation.

SteamOS is just arch with kde plasma for the desktop

the annoying thing about SteamOS is kernel updates wipe anything you install that isn't a flatpak or appimage, for the sake of not shitting itself running on a handheld

I feel like it would be better to just learn how to use arch for a full desktop

Pretty much this. If you're using your PC for work of any kind, you're going to want to pick something other than SteamOS. Even Gaben says not to use it as your all-in-one operating system.

mint, ubuntu, bazzite are all fine as a normal OS
debian is moreso for servers and red hat is made for corporate use

I want to try SteamOS soon, but need to research for optimal hardware or maybe wait for steam console

Nobara Linux is a great beginner choice for gaming on desktop. It's based on Fedora, has gayming configs and GPU drivers ready to go, and streamlined package management for reduced time in the terminal emulator (if you like). Looks good ootb too.
Any mainstream distro will be fine really. I used Void Linux for like 5 years and it was cozy for games.

If you dual boot you run the risk of things shitting themselves up especially if you aren't dual booting with separate disks. Also just use VirtualBox to test out linux.

>SteamOS, aka Bazzite
probably the easiest choice and setup for steam gaming and emulation, also beginner friendly
>Ubuntu
it's the equivalent of a Home edition of Windows, the most basic tier Linux system
>Mint
probably the second alternative to Bazzite, has similar optimization
>RedHat
beter suited for business, data analysis, crypto, and other corporate/company usage
>Debian
more suited for server-side utilities rather than games, might only be considered having it if your purpose includes only hosting a dedicated server
>Void
it is the lightest form of Linux, mostly for minimalistic usage or for a single-focused kind of use (i.e.: solely for browsing, solely for programming, solely for emulation, etc)

I am. Hence why I just bought another NVMe just for it.
