The WoW is build on Alliance vs Horde in practice. Each faction fights the same foe sure, and there's nominal cooperation, but everyday gameplay and dailies and shit should be faction specific.
And giving up one of the capitals to neutrality means fucking up Horde content involving that faction. I'm sure an orc player might not give a fuck but the elves do.
And if you take it further and consider people that are autistic enough to get in character, blood elves fucking detest the Alliance after what happened during the aftermath of W3. Makes sense they'd not want those filthy fuckers in Silvermoon.

WoW's been since the start meant to be a continuation of W3's story where the former Horde races and the Alliance banded together against the larger threat, even if they still want to rip each other's throats out.
But somehow, ever since, whenever it turns back to Alliance vs Horde, Horde is still the bad guy with the consequences layed on the leaders. Which if this was just Wacraft games getting sequel after sequel might work, but in an MMO it does not.

It's been an issue in WoW for longer than you know that the Alliance has always had blatant favoritism over the Horde. Why specifically? Because Alliance players are the ones who are more likely to bitch and whine on the forums over anything they don't like and agree with, while Horde players are the type to be content just playing the game and discussing it with friends. There have been points in the story in which Alliance players have complained so much that they got entire characters written away, or plot lines changed entirely. When stuff like this arises, people know it's only a matter of time until Blizzard changes it, because they always cater directly to them. Hell, Alliance players got the original Worgen models removed and replaced, and because it was a hack job, the models were incredibly jank for years. The devs no longer put time and effort into faction specific questing anymore, so Horde players have been forced to babysit Alliance characters for over a decade at this point, while anytime there's even a hint of an Alliance player having to aid a Horde character, they once again take to the forums and complain loud enough until Blizzard changes it and removes them entirely. This happened with one character in specific, and because of it, the character didn't receive any amount of story whatsoever for several years. It went so far as to affect role-players, too. An entire race basically doesn't exist in RP now because of it. There's an obvious sense of entitlement that Alliance players have, and they have an incredibly apparent victim complex that they use to justify everything that they feel needs to change. The only characters at this point that they even bother writing story for are humans and elves, because as it turns out, none of the left-wing writers in California are capable of writing masculine, brutish-looking men that are pumping with adrenaline and testosterone. The continued sissification of WoW absolutely stems from this, too.

There's a 0% chance anyone retarded enough to be posting on the WoW forums is not going to be buying the expansion.

Who the fuck thinks like this? In all the years I played WoW I never came across anyone who took this arbitrary faction split seriously. There's no gameplay imbalance or content locks (that aren't symmetrical). The classes are balanced between factions and everyone gets the same endgame. Horde only gets shafted in the lore, and no one ever gave a shit about the lore even before all the raping Blizzard subjected it to.

The only time I remember factions being at all relevant for content and gameplay was PvP battlegrounds, but even then it wasn't exactly horde vs. alliance, but rivalry between premades. We would've been slinging shit at each other even if it had been alliance vs. alliance.

Not even a long time WoW player, every time WoW news come up I get sad because I see what Warcraft used to be and represent and the sad corpse it is now. There has never been an expansion that focuses on an alliance leader as the villian. Unless you want to count arthas for some reason. There have been two of those for the horde both ending with the leaders exiting the faction. There are cultures in the world that do dig up their dead and parade them around to celebrate their life. But for the most part corpses are instinctually repulsive and you probably have some form of ptsd involving shambling undead. Totally understandable. The feeling when I first crossed the Dark Portal. Impossible to describe with words, you had to be there. I played ever since the Vanilla public beta came out, stopped playing around Cataclysm, returning for some time during Mists of Pandaria, since it was an expansion with beautiful, new zones and Monk class turned out to be surprisingly good.
