Nier had more potential, but SB has better execution so it ends up better.
Combat in Nier would have more variety but it's absolutely crippled by retarded decisions like enemy levels, 99 of each consumable or super powerful spammable dodge. SB kind of falls apart when fighting multiple enemies, but 1v1 boss fights are alright. Extra bits in Automata like shmup sections are too simplistic to count.
Storywise SB is nothing special, but Automata is a complete waste so it wins by default. I liked how it's revealed that humans in SB are all androids and they don't know about the original humanity and how the game let you piece it together much earlier. Lame ending though. Nier had more potential but did jack shit with it other than forcing sad moments and asking "are robots human" a hundred times with zero other development.
Graphics-wise it's comparable. SB has actual city environments and not just copypasted empty concrete shells, but both open environments are just deserts.
Music-wise again comparable. Automata has higher highs, but lower lows. Both are outclassed by the original Nier.
Characters are bland in both. Automata's have zero motivation of their own and exist only to have contrived feel-sad moments. SB's biggest offender is Eve who has a personality of an anemone.
