Surprisingly, it actually takes lot of talent to make a good VN, because you need both a good Artist and a Good writer, with a story good enough to maintain their attention long enough to finish the thing, all to appeal to a fairly niche genre very few people will play unless an E-crleb picks it up or it becomes an anime.
For me, Slay the Princess essentially made any other VN feel redundant. It was a concept and story that was pretty much a perfect Marriage for the genre. More conventional stories just feel clunky
