lemme explain it to you.
you cannot own something that is owned by someone else, that constitutes stealing. the IP holder is the sole party who owns that property. they licence for you to access that property in a way in which adheres to the end user licence agreement, and your purchase of that licence is implied agreement.

A license is an agreement that you get access to something someone else owns. A disc is a medium that lets you access your license. You don't own whats on a disc.

If I invite you over, thats a license to enter my property. You dont now own my footpath, even though you have to use it to access the license. Discs and downloads are the same thing, they nist the access to a license.

you own the medium that contains a licenced copy of the game. the physical components like the disc and case, you can do whatever you want with that, but you cannot do whatever you want with what's contained as that infringes on the licence agreement, that includes redistributing the physical media, because it is a vessel for the licenced property contained inside it. as the licensee, you do not have the right to redistribute, such permissions are reserved by the licence holder.

modifying the IP without permission from the rights holder is classed as an unauthorised derivative work which is an infringement.
it's "legal" in the same way fan art is. it's a grey area that is technically an infringement, but most rights holders allow it, they choose to tolerate it but can enforce legal action, especially if the mod is commercialised or that which portrays the IP in a way that could be damaging to its public image.

Okay, actually try it. Tell me how long you get. Steam uses expiring tokens to validate games. The reason they took the countdown off the offline page is because THAT countdown has NOTHING to do with when you need to sign back in. What matters is the signed timestamp PER GAME which Valve are too lazy to do anything about. They could make offline mode simply refresh all installed games at once and say "you have 120days" but they don't. If you haven't played a game in months, chances are its token is about to expire and offline mode doesn't change that. It'll expire tomorrow, you'll be angry that offline mode said you had 30 days, you'll complain, valve will proceed to not give a shit as usual.
