Epic thought that making a shit ton of new modes would save them from the inevitable truth that no one wants to admit to: Battle Royales are a dying genre, and Fortnite is old news. The surprise factor of the crossover aspect has lost its luster now that everyone is doing it now, and people have been jumping ship because the gameplay itself isn't enough of a draw anymore. valuing your one life allows there to be tension, but the 20-30 minute battle royale format allows for a very -lite- commitment compared to say a survival game like rust where your shit is gone if you die (though technically in rust you respawn, but still)

~the industry~ is taking the wrong idea from this kind of thing with pushing the extraction genre though, where it can be considered slightly more "hardcore" due to the penalty than battle royale, but zooms really don't have time besides between homework and dinner to play anything that requires a lot of time and that you can't just drop and leave
also the extraction genre is full of the mmo-pvper archetype of player that can't compete in regular games so they have all this pent up verbatim "toxicity" and need to use mechanical advantage in order to win, and they get to bring that mechanical advantage into new matches to "win" over people in lesser positions

I still mourn Fortnite, I was extremely excited for the PvE game when it was announced, looked forward to it, and then they made the br mode as a fucking goof and it blew up, I never even paid the money to try the PvE mode since they had already abandoned it by that point and just threw out whatever they had done up to that point.

I enjoyed it for a while but stopped playing because I noticed this playerbase throws a hissy fit whenever the devs try to make changes to the meta or gameplay and quickly revert them. Playerbase wants it to stay exactly the same. 1 pump shotguns, 1 tap snipers, a ton of mobility to get in and out in a second. They don't care about anything else.

I redownloaded it for the last big Star Wars event where they "changed" every weapon into Star War weapons thinking it would be fun fighting with blasters only, force powers and vehicles but once again, they had 1 pump shotguns and sniper variants and that's where the meta gravitated towards to making the matches feel exactly the same as any other season. Now there's the regular battle pass, classic pass, Lego pass, and festival pass.
All these new items need to stay now even if shit like Rocket Racing and Festival cap out at like 5 or 10k players.
BR mode is altered due to carz forcing the same two to be in the pool every season with a lot less vehicle versatility.
They've made zero effort to curiate or cultivate good Creator maps so it's always some low effort slop at the top just milking cash.
Regular BR, build or no build, is shite to play as every match is killing like 15 or so bots before you get to the final four or so teams where the guy who got the special 1 of on the map thing just wins.
